Tough category in that I liked every song submitted.
Charles Bradley is going to win the whole thing.
I certainly wouldnāt be opposed to this though I need to relisten to a few songs.
Alright I really like Fake Empire but I have to admit the Fleetwood Mac song is better
New year and the business end arrives, only 7 more match-ups left. Hereās the first two Quarter Finals.
Quarter Final 1
Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues
Vs
Rizzle Kicks - Down with the Trumpets
@cassette gave @Pauwl and Sunflower River Blues a victory in, fittingly, the āGuitarā category. It has ruined FKA Twigs and Seafood.
First impression: Ok, yup. Banger.
Later: Fuck yeah. A beautiful melody, great guitar tone, and an ace performance. Plus itās a guitar and only a guitar. Iāve been into this bluegrass/country stuff a lot lately and this hit the spot. Good fit, good song. Iāll listen to some more this. Cheers.
@SwankyWilder and Down With the Trumpets showed @eyebooger why where he lives has the best music. It was recently judged better than Soul Fugue and Explosions in the Sky.
Inebriated: Pretty sure I saw Rizzle Kicks on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Donāt think I know anything else about them. Not normally a hip-hop person, but this is pretty solid. Itās like hip-hop melded with dance friendly pop. This could work. Last song Iām listening to tonight, so that could be the reason Iām bobbing my head. Or maybe the song is legit good. Iāll find out later this weekend.
Ebriated: Loving this. Best use of trumpets in hip-hop since US3ās āCantaloopā. Catchy chorus, cool beat, fun lyrics. Stiff competition, but this could actually win this thing.
- Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues
- Rizzle Kicks - Down with the Trumpets
Quarter Final 2
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Vs
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well (1 & 2)
@mjiggy awarded @SwankyWilder first place for Hurt in a ācover that improves the songā round. He bested Lafayette Afro Rock Band and RAtM to get here.
Take what I said about Chris Cornellās Nothing Compares 2 U and then take it up another level for this song because of the weight added by him singing this song, with these lyrics, at the end of his career and towards the end of his life. It just takes on a completely different life than the original version in Cashās hands.
@suzzer99 won plaudits from @Jalfrezi with Oh Well when asked to submit London bands. Lately it beat Kenny Hoopla and previous tournament juggernauts, The National.
A great choice, half of which didnāt get much radio play so no dockage for familiarity - nice one if that was in suzzerās thinking.
- Johnny Cash - Hurt
- Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well (1 & 2)
I fear for my babies here
Still love Hurt but Iād like to see something less popular win.
Rizzle Kicks still wins for me although I do like that guitar song better than I remembered
Yeah, itās hard to disagree with that.
QFs 1 & 2 will remain open (see above) till tomorrow morning to give them a bit of non-weekend action. Stragglers glumly back at work, vote now!
Quarter Final 3
Charles Bradley - Strictly Reserved For You
Vs
Phoenix Rise - Protest
@Pauwl gave me and Strictly Reserved for You a win in a round about positive love songs. It beat Aphex Twin and Bob Dylan to get hereā¦
I know this is recent but it has that 70ās sound. Really cool. This is that kinda soul music I need to listen to more. This is a proper love song. Maybe this should win it all. Fuck it, this is a banger!.
@SwankyWilder won @eyeboogerās round about political songs from recent times (2017+) with Protest, which beat Bill Callahan and Suicidial Tendencies to be here today.
I wasnāt expecting a straight up BANGER for this category, but here we are. The beat, the lyrics, the flow are all top notch and have been stuck in my head for most of the day. This was the only song on the artistās Youtube page at the time of submission, so I donāt know how the hell you found this, but congrats.
- Charles Bradley - Strictly Reserved For You
- Phoenix Rise - Protest
Quarter Final 4
Run The Jewels - Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1
Vs
Ruby Freidman Orchestra - Youāll Never Leave Harlan Alive
@DodgerIrish pumped up @cassette to dangerous levels with Blockbuster Night, being the best hit the gym / get pumped up song. Lately it beat Anna Meredith and Sparks.
Killer Mike is a beast. Sick production. Run the Jewels donāt resonate with me most of the time, but this is great and has a nice tempo for a long run. Added to my gym playlist.
@Pauwl won @mjiggyās Soundtrack category with Youāll Never Leaveā¦ Recently it humbled Mariah Carey and Michael Kiwanuka.
I guess that leaves Pauwl alone on the podium with the one certified banger that was submitted to this category. Wire to wire winner, Iāll let the song speak for itself because Iām off to go listen to it again myself.
- Run The Jewels - Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1
- Ruby Freidman Orchestra - Youāll Never Leave Harlan Alive
Iām not sure these are the best eight songs that have been submitted to walruses but itās a nice variety of songs and genres and, importantly, not a stinker in the group. Iāve got a clear top 3 and probably only two that I wouldnāt want winning the whole thing but I would listen to any of these over again.
tough choices, but gonna have to go with gnarls barkley and night ranger
How do I vote for both match 4 songs to advance over both from match 3?
First two !SEMI FINALISTS! decided. Two more settled tomorrow.
Rizzle Kicks
Fleetwood Mac
Final Semi Finalists in place.
Ruby Freidman Orchestra
Charles Bradley
So only 4 left. Iāll start trying to get in touch with agents for the big award bash.
Semi Final 1

Could be wrong but this matchup feels like the final to me.
Iāve got it as
Rizzle Kicks > RFO >> Charles Bradley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fleetwood Mac
Seriously, how the hell did that song make the Final Four of this thing?
Itās probably my least favorite of the remaining songs but I like it just fine; really the problem is that it knocked off golden boy Kenny Hoopla.
OK, took a day off for you Americans to work some shit out. Seems fine now, so onwards!
(Semi Final 1 still open above.)
Semi Final 2
