Best Song Ever Bracket!! (Walrus of Walri). All Welcome.

My tribute to a fallen giant:

See you all on the other side.

This Run The Jewels is murder, mayhem, melodic music.

Update - I am a few hours into this sonic homage and feel I am finally starting to piece together the message being imparted by the artist; He is being taken somewhere.

But where? And by whom?

I can only hope further study will bring the answer to these questions, and if it’s not too much to ask in such a year, some closure.

Gonna wack up the last 4 from this round then leave it a good few days. Seems best for this lazy between holidays time.

Round 3 Match 5 (of 8)

The National - Fake Empire
Vs
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well (1 & 2)

@mysteryconman got rewarded by @anon29622970 for Fake Empire in the ‘2000-09 Indie’ category. Recently it defeated another The National song.

Wow do I just completely love this song! Literally probably my favorite song from this era not by a band I originally posted for my examples. I don’t think it’s possible to listen to this song and not feel completely transported in time.

@suzzer99 won plaudits from @Jalfrezi with Oh Well when asked to submit London bands. Lately it beat Kenny Hoopla.

A great choice, half of which didn’t get much radio play so no dockage for familiarity - nice one if that was in suzzer’s thinking.

Round 3 Match 6 (of 8)

Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name
Vs
Johnny Cash - Hurt

@cassette owned @CanadaMatt3004’s category about live sing-a-longs with Killing in the Name. Last time out it beat Jeremy Soule.

Zach is the crowd king. I’ve seen Rage live, and its a transcendent experience. I lost pounds of body weight in sweat that night and I loved every second of it. They’re fucking chanting with the bass line and Tom’s riff. Its chills worthy. Finsbury Park brings it hard and this is a very worth number 1.

@mjiggy awarded @SwankyWilder first place for Hurt in a “cover that improves the song” round. He bested Lafayette Afro Rock Band last round.

Take what I said about Chris Cornell’s Nothing Compares 2 U and then take it up another level for this song because of the weight added by him singing this song, with these lyrics, at the end of his career and towards the end of his life. It just takes on a completely different life than the original version in Cash’s hands.

Round 3 Match 7 (of 8)

Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized
Vs
Phoenix Rise - Protest

@JohnnyTruant submitted Institutionalized, and @seities thought it was the angriest angry song. It’s last victim was Jim Croce.

I mean this just perfectly encapsulates the category for me. And if you don’t like it then I’m not crazy, you’re the one that’s crazy.

@SwankyWilder won @eyebooger’s round about political songs from recent times (2017+) with Protest, which beat Bill Callahan in its last contest.

I wasn’t expecting a straight up BANGER for this category, but here we are. The beat, the lyrics, the flow are all top notch and have been stuck in my head for most of the day. This was the only song on the artist’s Youtube page at the time of submission, so I don’t know how the hell you found this, but congrats.

Round 3 Match 8 (of 8)

Bob Dylan - Knockin on Heaven’s Door
Vs
Charles Bradley - Strictly Reserved For You

@SwankyWilder and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door ruled supreme in @RiskyFlush’s song off of a soundtrack category. Bad Religion got wrecked in its last outing.

The one shining spot of the film that no one could disagree with was “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” written by Bob Dylan just for this movie. I don’t know that I have anything more to say about the song that hasn’t been said before. It is one of Dylan’s finest songs.

@Pauwl gave me and Strictly Reserved for You a win in a round about positive love songs. It beat Aphex Twin last time.

I know this is recent but it has that 70’s sound. Really cool. This is that kinda soul music I need to listen to more. This is a proper love song. Maybe this should win it all. Fuck it, this is a banger!.

Both match 8 songs deserve to advance over both match 7 songs imo but thems the breaks. Good stuff this round

Going to have to listen to category 5 a few times to decide, really like both of those songs. Not sure whether to penalize or reward Oh Well for knocking off my beloved Kenny Hoopla.

I know one thing for sure: “Hurt” is coming in second place overall.

Just realized that two of the remaining songs were from my five category walrus, proving as always that popular music is the best music*

*not something I actually believe but have to stay in character

Fwiw, Rage is a better category fit than Hurt.

Sure Cash does a great job, but the original is already a great song in it’s own right and Cash doesnt improve it in any significant way

The National losing is rather disappointing

Yes.

Absolutely not. Trent Reznor himself disagrees with you.

Yeah the Cash version is definitely better although I like the original. Feels more personal imo.

No way. Reznor’s version is better.

I think it was you who submitted Cocteau Twins - Ivo to a Walrus and it got nodiumed. I would have given it first in any category. I still listen to it all the time.

The best thing about seeing Bob Dylan in a matchup is that you can see his name and automatically vote the opposite
