- Bernadette - The Beginning and the End
- Alison Krauss - Jacobâs Dream

Thanks, and all updated. Your other song was in 12, must have misread the search I did this morning. You did still vote for it, honest.
Song is decent, probably not going to get my vote but Iâm glad weâve got the full 96 now!
Drunk thoughts-So Iâm not done yet. Two more rounds of mostly first impressions
Darkest Light-If you asked me what sort of song I would expect from a group called The Lafayette Afro Rock Band, called the Darkest Light. This is exactly what I would expect. Nothing wrong with that, a cool fun soulful song.
Swallowtail-Enjoyed it, but seemed pretty forgettable. This doesnât factor in to my thoughts at all, but The Brian Jonestown Massacre seems like a pretty bad name for a band, maybe it wasnât that bad back when they decided it.
Inhale Exhale-quick catchy little song at first. I thought it was about to go into qa chorus, but rejected that. I donât know seems like the sort of song that needs a chorus, or a longer build. Weird but I agree there is some talent there. But seems like a song not fully built.
Before the Storm-Yeah not my genre, moving on
The Beginning and the End-
In first place is a just a female and a piano, basically my favorite genre.
-Wonât say itâs my favorite genre. But at the same time canât argue I really dug this. Early on I commented female vocalists done right seems to get my votes. But havenât had that really come up since then.
Jacobâs Dream-I said all that pretty much knowing I was going to vote Krauss before I even heard this song. Never heard this song. But so good.
I have an irrational hatred of the saxumaphone, but that Lafayette Afro Rock Band track has itâs groove on!
OK, the last round winners are crowned.
Anna Meredith
Lafayette Afro Rock Band
Round 2 is finally here. Weâre now in a 32 two team straight knockout for all the marbles.
For this round I random-ed it, except that itâs group winners vs runners up and Iâve kept apart songs from the same group and same submitter. For the next round Iâll stick with avoiding same group and submitter, but after that it will be simply as the numbers tell me.
Iâll put two matches up at a time and give two days for voting. I might start another batch of matches while thereâs still voting to be done, but weâll see how it goes. Thanks to those of you who have voted so far, keep it up!
Edit - Further boring process note. If songs got the same amount of votes in a group then I split 1st / 2nd by the old random numbers. There was never any tie between 2nd / 3rd places, so all songs are HERE BY RIGHT!
Round 2 - Match 1 (of 16)
Bill Callahan - Riding For The Feeling
Vs
Phoenix Rise - Protest
@Lawnmower_Man impressed @ChrisV with Riding For The Feeling as a walking-home-from-the-pub song. It then won Group 11.
It took me a while to come to terms with the almost spoken-word style of singing in parts of this and to get into the vibe of the song, but once I did, I started really feeling it. I canât even explain what I like about it, but a bit like Manchester Orchestra - The Silence the other day, it really got under my skin. I like it as a category fit. And also like Manchester Orchestra, on a podium where things could really have gone in any order, this got bumped to the top for being an entirely new artist to me and something Iâd never have heard otherwise.
@SwankyWilder won @eyeboogerâs round about political songs from recent times (2017+) with Protest, which then came second in Group 12.
I wasnât expecting a straight up BANGER for this category, but here we are. The beat, the lyrics, the flow are all top notch and have been stuck in my head for most of the day. This was the only song on the artistâs Youtube page at the time of submission, so I donât know how the hell you found this, but congrats.
- Bill Callahan - Riding For The Feeling
- Phoenix Rise - Protest
Round 2 - Match 2 (of 16)
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name
Vs
Jeremy Soule - Fear Not This Night
@cassette owned @CanadaMatt3004âs category about live sing-a-longs with Killing in the Name. It then won Group 12.
Zach is the crowd king. Iâve seen Rage live, and its a transcendent experience. I lost pounds of body weight in sweat that night and I loved every second of it. Theyâre fucking chanting with the bass line and Tomâs riff. Its chills worthy. Finsbury Park brings it hard and this is a very worth number 1.
@LouisCyphre picked the best video game music and so @CanadaMatt3004 had to give him top marks for Fear not this Night. Then it came runner up in Group 11.
This song just builds and builds at the beginning and then leads into this haunting, beautiful selection by Asja Kadric. This is a song that will certainly land in my regular rotation. I loved it, and it gave me chills multiple times. The accompaniment is swelling and breathtaking. Great song, great choice.
- Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name
- Jeremy Soule - Fear Not This Night
Didnât expect Iâd go Phoenix Rise, but that was my feeling just now. KitN has to be an early favourite, Iâd guess, though they could run in to Meat Loaf at any moment.
Voted against KITN not because I think itâs the worse song but just because itâs such a known quantity for me that Iâd like to see something else move on.
went Phoenix Rise as itâs still great; the other one is nice also; i like both
RATM is awesome and thatâs a great performance, but it shouldnât be shocking I went with Fear Not This Night, which is a great song I didnât know of and which would have done well in my Hauntingly Beautiful Walrus
Phoenix Rise vs. Callahan took listening to about 4 notes of each.
Round 2 - Match 3 (of 16)
FKA Twigs - Water Me
Vs
Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues
@cassette won as Water Me was as Hot as a Haddock. @SwankyWilder judged, obviously. It then won Group 13.
This was a winner from the first play. As I mentioned earlier, I loaded all the tracks on to a playlist and I was listening for the first time having a stroll along the seafront where I live
And when this song came on it stopped me in my tracks- I sat down and listened to it 3 or 4 times in a row. Beautiful, haunting, melancholic a fantastic piece of work, I was vaguely aware of FKA Twigs before, but this just knocked me out.
There are a few songs where I can vividly remember where and when I first heard them, This is one.
@cassette gave @Pauwl and Sunflower River Blues a victory in, fittingly, the âGuitarâ category. It got runner up in Group 2.
First impression: Ok, yup. Banger.
Later: Fuck yeah. A beautiful melody, great guitar tone, and an ace performance. Plus itâs a guitar and only a guitar. Iâve been into this bluegrass/country stuff a lot lately and this hit the spot. Good fit, good song. Iâll listen to some more this. Cheers.
- FKA Twigs - Water Me
- Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues
Round 2 - Match 4 (of 16)
Sparks - My Babyâs Taking Me Home
Vs
Dream Warriors - Wash Your Face in my Sink
@Rivaldo persuaded me that this was the best song to catch peopleâs ears during a dinner party. It then won Group 16.
On the one hand this song just repeats the line âMy Babyâs Taking Me Homeâ over and over (107 times if you believe someone on youtube), on the other thereâs so much going on as the song progresses itâs hard to keep track. You can hear pure pop, music hall, krautrock, electronic music, minimalism, all sorts. Thatâs all without considering the performance here (itâs a live track), which elevates it even further. Really, this blew me away. Canât wait to get stuck into their back catalogue. Toppest marks.
@seities realy tickled @Yuvâs funny bone with Wash Your Face in my Sink, when the goal was something called âhumourâ (but not comedy songs). It then got runner up in Group 7.
Okay, how did I miss this gem? I blame it on them being Canadian and therefore invisible to the rest of the world.
Somewhere in high-school I discovered that girls arenât very interested in hearing my stories about how Crass are actually anarchists who live in abandoned buildings. For a few very fun months I moved my musical interests from angry punks to late 80s early 90s âjazz-rapâ or whatever you wanna call it. I downloaded all the a tribe called quest, de la soul, arrested development, jurassic 5, pharcyde, digable planets, brand nubian I could find online.
Turns out it wasnât the musicâs fault.
I donât know if âWash your face in my sinkâ is a Canadian saying, but it really should be. I think they mean it in a âmind your own businessâ way or maybe musical plagiarism, either way itâs really a good catchphrase.
Loved every second of this. The jazzy sample at the beginning sounded almost âskaâ to me. The delivery is perfect and humorous as fuck (even the way he says âwhen doves cryâ or âyou just canât reachâ). The cute twist on the last verse. A great song from start to finish.
Iâm not sure the person who sent it thought it would win, but he did write - âI think this captures the spirit of your categoryâ. It sure did. Congratulations on a well deserved win, you actually undersold the track in your commentary.
- Sparks - My Babyâs Taking Me Home
- Dream Warriors - Wash Your Face in my Sink
Shame FKA Twigs and Jack Rose met now, really love both of those. Had to give Jack the nod, though, I wouldnât be the man I am today without noodly acoustic guitar instrumentals. Iâm also hoping Sparks juggernauts this whole thing.
Well, looks like my babyâs taking me home.
My babyâs taking me home
My babyâs taking me home
Wash Your Face In My Sink deserved better than a first round blowout but somebody had to get crushed by MBTMH
