Best Song Ever Bracket!! (Walrus of Walri). All Welcome.

Not really feeling this category either, although it wasn’t that stuff was bad but more that it didn’t really stand out to me. The song I like the most is in dead last even after my vote but this Fela Kuti fellow is also quite good.

Drunken Thoughts

Emotions-Mariah Carey is clearly in the top tier of divas. Don’t think I have heard this before (despite the 38 mil views). But digging it so far. I don’t think this was a special Carey, but a very good Carey. When you see someone imitating Carey, they go to the extreme vocal ranges she went here for no reason.

Your Hand is Mine-Something about my pandora account led this to me, and I favorited and listened to it quite a few times. Bad ass song. Have no problems voting this through, but hoping next few songs grab me.

Satelitte-Real cool song. Music video to this as simple as it works for me.

Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales-Alright. Not really doing much for me though. The 90s sort of band that is minimalist.

Horndog-Had me rocking me head as soon as the horndog hit with a smile on my face. Surprised I am liking this as much as I am. That being said two minutes in and it is wearing out its welcome. Kind of shocking I turned on this song given it was only 3 minutes long. But I am done with this.

Zombie-Look I like a long song if I feel it is building up to something. 3 minutes in, waiting to see if it builds to something…Alright I liked for two minutes when they came back to vocals, even if it was gibberish. They easily could have condensed this to a 4 minute song with nothing lost.

I’m not in love with this round. Satelittle, Your Hand is Mine, shrug

Fela sings in Nigerian Pidgin. I don’t understand it either, but given the history involved I don’t think we should describe it as ‘gibberish’.

Well, that was a personally upsetting end to the voting, but the will of the people is what this is all about and your winners are:

There’s a issue with a song link for 15 so I’ve PMed the person responsible and we’ll skip ahead for now.

First up Carole King who feels, of course like a Natural Woman

@microbet blew @King_of_NY away with these female vocals.

I get the impression that this was the first song that immediately popped into your head when you read the category, and one listen tells you why. Voice and anthem for a generation. You make me feel. and win all the points.

Then Gotye singing about Somebody That I Used to Know

@miliboo topped the charts of @mjiggy with this track from the Billboard top ten post 2010.

Yeah I think this is the best song I’ve heard on the radio over the last 10 years and it ended up being a massive hit. I remember hearing it for the first time and just thinking “Wait wtf was that? That was actually kind of awesome.”

Next up it’s Kesha and her Resentment

@m_hood115 smashed @anon29622970 in the face with this amazing genre smash-up.

An awesome departure from the Queen of Bangers! Again a country sound to this song that I actually like, which is rather surprising to me. Incredible all-around musical talent on this track.

Continuing with Rizzle Kicks who are Down with the Trumpets

@SwankyWilder showed @eyebooger why where he lives has the best music

Inebriated: Pretty sure I saw Rizzle Kicks on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Don’t think I know anything else about them. Not normally a hip-hop person, but this is pretty solid. It’s like hip-hop melded with dance friendly pop. This could work. Last song I’m listening to tonight, so that could be the reason I’m bobbing my head. Or maybe the song is legit good. I’ll find out later this weekend.

Ebriated: Loving this. Best use of trumpets in hip-hop since US3’s “Cantaloop”. Catchy chorus, cool beat, fun lyrics. Stiff competition, but this could actually win this thing.

And onwards it’s The Five Stairsteps going O-o-h Child

@suzzer99 managed to shift @ChrisV’s mood the most with this one.

I know this should probably eat an obviousness penalty as well, but against that, I warned people against RNB and disco in the signup thread, so even though I’m fine with soul, this should probably have looked like a dangerous submission (and suzzer actually apologized for the genre in his submission). I’ve heard this a couple times before, but couldn’t have told you what it was called. I’m sure there are some ITT who have heard it a million times, but I’m equally sure they’ll agree it’s a stone cold classic. Uplifting and relaxing all at once, it hasn’t failed to put me in a good mood yet. Killer track.

Finally Sparks want us to really know that My Baby’s Taking Me Home

@Rivaldo persuaded me that this was the best song to catch people’s ears during a dinner party.

On the one hand this song just repeats the line “My Baby’s Taking Me Home” over and over (107 times if you believe someone on youtube), on the other there’s so much going on as the song progresses it’s hard to keep track. You can hear pure pop, music hall, krautrock, electronic music, minimalism, all sorts. That’s all without considering the performance here (it’s a live track), which elevates it even further. Really, this blew me away. Can’t wait to get stuck into their back catalogue. Toppest marks.

Fela Kuti absolutely robbed in the last round

I’m absolutely down with the trumpets for this selection. Going to re-listen to find my distant second choice

Thanks for the effort you’ve put into this- much appreciated

Bummer. Feels like our tastes don’t align that frequently but on rare occasions they are perfectly in tune and that Zombie song really did something for me; I will rarely listen to 12 minute songs the whole way through but that’s the kind of thing I’d like to play at work or while doing things around the house. I probably need to look into that artist more and share him with my brother who is more into music like that.

Chuckles Drunken Thoughts

(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman-An obvious classic. First time I have hear a live recording of it from King. Kinda cool King and Houston both kill this song from different ways.

Somebody That I Used To Know-yeah overplayed for me, I mean its fun, catchy and all, but not getting my vote.

Resentment-Never heard this before. I had heard Kesha had got away from the bangers. Which her bangers are bangers. But this was really cool.

Down With The Trumpets-Fun song, I’m down with the trumpets. Enjoyed the music video too.

The Five Stairsteps - O-o-h Child-I didn’t think I would once pull my card of I thought this was an obvious classic, why does this have under 2 mil youtube views.

My Baby’s Taking Me Home-There is no fucking reason a 6 minute song of repeating “My Baby’s Taking Me Home” should be so good. Such an inspired choice. The slow making the “My Baby’s Taking Me Home” different I just love. Just 7247 views, and this video has been stuck in my head ever since it was first posted. From the youtube comments “My baby’s taking me home 107 times - still it doesn’t feel repetitive”

My Baby’s Taking Me Home easily gets my vote. Going Resentment for the other but close.

I’ve been looking forward to this song joining the fray. One of my favourite Walrus-introduced tracks.

This is a great service you are providing Goatnitski. ty for your efforts.

See this is a tough category: couple of absolute classics, a recent-ish pop hit, a couple of surprise bangers, and then…Sparks. I gotta say I don’t remember being too impressed with this song when it won but I’m starting to change my tune. Really feel like the three songs I didn’t know were strong enough to eliminate the ones I did but not sure which of those I want to move on.

Good thing is the results aren’t close so my vote didn’t matter much either way.

This can’t be final round

I’ve done a few walruses (walrii?) here and didn’t see any of my category winners in the thread.

One was in round 9, you did vote for it, and I think the other is sadly the problematic song from Round 15 that we can’t find another version of. Round 15 got skipped but should be up a little later today.

heart

A thing about the heart system. I probably would have quit after 2 posts or so if it wasn’t for the fact saw I was getting hearts. Once we get to the next round won’t be much for me say though when are past first impressions. But I’ll still vote.

First up it’s Lafayette Afro Rock Band in the Darkest Light.

@MimosaDef persuaded @Jalfrezi that this was the best use of a saxophone.

Well here’s a thing. Coincidentally sampled in Dodger’s selection, a fabulous intro and groove sets up this great piece of primal funk from the early 70s.

Wiki tells me it’s been sampled by numerous other artists including Public Enemy, Ice Cube and Jay-Z and I’m not surprised because it sounds almost definitive of its type and therefore gets maximum points and me annoying people by whistling it sometimes. I’d be happy if it went on for 20 minutes which is how I often feel about songs with a persistently deep rhythmic hook.

This has so much feeling, and every time I came back to this I was sure.

Then The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Swallowtail.

@Pauwl made @cassette weep like a baby with this saddest of all songs.

The song is my permanent mood right now. Played it twice in a row and then the full album three or four times since. This is one of those bands in the back of my brain that I’ve never actually given a shot. Thanks for this. I love it.

Next another real standout where Anna Meredith goes Inhale / Exhale.

I impressed @Jalfrezi this time with a song in a style I don’t normally go for.

Pyat says “I think it’s electro pop and given it’s from a few months back as well means I do not normally go for that sort of thing.

I’m not sure exactly what it is either but it has some unusual musical ideas, takes off from about the 1 minute mark and doesn’t look back - the arrangement is really quite something.

This track successfully blends some experimentation and conventional pop in a way not totally dissimilar to how Roxy did in their day, and I like it a lot. She has real musical talent and imagination and I’ll check out her other stuff.

We continue with Kayzo just Before the Storm.

@goofyballer showed what a weirdo he is with this weird entry for @cassette’s weird category.

I got a little worried we were approaching Linkin Park territory in the intro and some of the breakdowns, but those sections don’t dominate and the verses are pretty badass. There are some really good electronic elements that are put to good use (see 1:30 and following for a highlight). I’ll listen to some more of this. It also does a really good job of being unusual but also being a great song. Cheers.

Now it’s Bernadette who’s reaching The Beginning and the End.

@eyebooger impressed and scared @Nicholasp27 with this example of haunting beauty.

In first place is a just a female and a piano, basically my favorite genre.

https://soundcloud.com/bernadettelara/the-beginning-and-the-end-anathema-cover

And finally Alison Krauss telling us about Jacob’s Dream.

@RiskyFlush took down @seities version of the whole genre-you-don’t-like-too-much thing.

A sad tale put to song, it was Krauss’ voice that first hit me about this. It’s sad, haunting and beautiful all at the same time. I also like the purity of taking an event/happening and putting it to song to preserve for future generations. Also, this is nowhere near something I would usually have on my playlist. Nice one, RiskyFlush.
