Bailout / Stimulus Discussion (Hints Missed & Shartz Fired)

I just don’t get how emergency UBI is not on the table.

If the GOP wanted to have a chance this Nov passing emergency UBI at the beginning would of been the ticket.

If you were a GOP strategist, how would you frame emergency UBI for conservatives?

They could still come out and say “Look we were wrong with our approach, we need to take dramatic measures to stop this thing. Your country cares about you though so here is what we are going to do. For the next 3 months everyone adult will receive 3K emergency UBI. We are also going to pause all mortgages and rent. This will cost us 1.89 trillion dollars. We are going to implement a wealth tax to pay this back over the next 5 years (or whatever). But we have to stay home. Only essential workers. And we mean essential. We are all in this together. Lets hunker down for the next 90 days. Together we can get through this and be stronger on the other side.”

Rather than having the govt decide how you can spend your money we believe in individuals making the best decisions. There is no bureaucracy that eats up the cost. Just money to the people.

They’re high on their own supply. If they just started handing out money their electoral problems would be far less pronounced. They can’t help themselves.

This is good and would probably work. Good job.

I put it similarly to a relative when stimulus payments were first being dispersed. This isn’t free money. This is money YOU paid into the system that is now being given back to you. Obv she would have cashed the check anyway while screaming “BUT SOCIALISM,” but I’m crossing my fingers I planted one tiny seed.

To the extent a persuadable person exists, and by definition such people are god damn morons, I’d remind them that Stimulus Round One gave away $10k per person - how much did they see?

They care far more about those doing the donating than those doing the voting

This also wouldn’t have fucked over people like my wife who is currently working as a nurse/supervisor at an assisted living facility for less than she’d get for unemployment. There’s something super super super offensive about being forced to work for less than free doing something dangerous, and there’s just no other way to interpret it for most ‘essential’ workers.

Like I hear people calling them essential, but sure as fuck aren’t being paid like they are essential are they?

Let’s be really clear… our side helped do this. They decided to push the money through the unemployment system and that had major extremely unfair implications that disproportionately hurt minorities. We knew this would happen too.

This can easily be made right with a bill that sends the COVID essentials a check in the future, and I’ll be pretty disappointed if that doesn’t happen. It’s not really about me, I more than made up for it with my own little mini business owners bailout so we’re doing fine this year financially which I’m super grateful for… but the aides at my wife’s job who work there for 13 bucks an hour? For them I’m fucking furious.

If you have a true good faith conservative (rare) I like to point out too that you can’t believe in freedom of opportunity without your basic needs being covered. UBI, healthcare, and education can be put in that bucket. It should be a conservative principle to make sure all your neighbors are taken care of.

Then when the basic needs are covered people can have a chance at being whatever they want. But when you grow up super poor if you are not blessed with intelligence or a super creative mind you have little chance of accomplishing your “dreams”.

Right. Maybe instead of just unemployed people getting an extra 600/wk, EVERYONE should be getting an extra 600/wk. What a novel fucking concept.

But that’s socialism

It looks like the GOP is shooting for an extra $100/week in unemployment money rather than $600.

They think that’s more than enough to pay rent.

I mean I have expected the number to ultimately be $0/week but $100 is laughable and might as well be $0.

Of course the STONKS market loved it and moved up on the news.

At one company I worked at the owner once gave me a $50 bonus. I was kind of like wtf you should have just kept it.

What that tells us is there is definitely going to be an extension of something. I think you might be close with your $400 guess.

$100 / week on top of the $189 / week from the state of OK. Fucking sick. Now I can stay at home for the rest of the year and live like that neighbor in the other thread.

It makes me sick to my stomach honestly. That isn’t going to help much of anyone. Fuck this country. I have some hope than nun is right and this is just an opening offer and it goes up in negotiations. I can’t really imagine the suffering that is going to ensue if this is the final number in the bill.

They should meet them in the middle and just take $100 off the $600.
