Just driving up turnout on the other side and burning some people on the R aside enough that they stay home. Electorally it makes no sense.
I like this strategy. I would pass two bills out of the House. One with way more support, and one as the GOP wants it. Then you can point and say, “We wanted to give you $800/wk instead of $600. We wanted to give you $4,000 stimulus checks, instead of $1,200. We wanted to give it to everyone making under $100K, instead of $75K. They instead went with $300/wk, $1,200 and $40K income cutoffs. Vote accordingly!”
The country is getting hurt that badly anyway. Like if Dems scratch and claw on this, what’s the most they’re going to be able to negotiate for? Realistically the GOP is in lock-step on the CARES act not going above your prior income. So what you’re looking at is maybe a slightly bigger stimulus check and/or lifting the stimulus cap a bit to like $50K or $60K a year.
But I’ll tell you how the GOP is really fucking this up royally. They’re alienating people earning high five and low six figures. Like if you make > $75K and < $250K let’s say, you’re getting nada in these bills and your taxes are paying for the corporate bailouts for the wealthy and the help for the working class. You’re just getting it from both sides, and whether you support helping the working class or not (I certainly do), I don’t think anybody making $80-250K a year is like, “Yes, please, tax me more so that Jeff Bezos can be richer.”
Mnuchin says 1 Tril, money to be spent on opening schools, getting people back to work, and vaccines.
So essentially, "Fuck your stimulus. If you want our money, states, you have to open the schools. And to you lazy motherfuckers who are unemployed through no fault of your own because of a global fucking pandemic?
Fuck you"
They’re literally going to pay schools to open up and kill the kids. Bond movie super villain level stuff.
This next bill is just going to be a hodgepodge of withholding things from the needy in favor of those willing to risk their lives to feed the machine. Its super gross, and we are beyond fucked. Brush off your dustbowl photos, its time for an update.
Even Bond villains didn’t increase the Federal deficit with their evil schemes.
So I made $1600 last week and that kills my PUA for the week. So net $450ish assuming I lose both state and fed. :(
Will intentionally push off the rest of my project a week to try and get the last PUA paid. Finish up the project in August (another 1600 roughly).
Of course they are still 9 weeks behind in paying me. No news since the email 10 days ago.
What in the fuck is the justification for a payroll tax cut? At least peg it to essential workers or something.
Trickle down baby
I think the “logic” is to reward people who are working instead of lazy poors sitting on their couches eating lobster and ribeye with food stamps.
In GOP world there is no such thing as involuntary unemployment, ever.
Also for some reason coverage of the next round of stimulus completely ignores that it can’t pass without the Democratic House? Everything I’ve seen frames it as a negotiation between Mitch and Trump.
Also, this is legitimately insane.
White House officials have said they have disagreements with Republican lawmakers over how much funding is needed in the next round. The White House wants no additional funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including funding for the distribution of a vaccine. The administration also opposes including more money for testing and contact tracing, as well as for the National Institutes of Health, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.
Haven’t we seen how things have played out with the Dem house over and over? Has there been a single piece of legislation passed by the GOP Senate that hasn’t been passed (with minor modifications) by the House? I legitimately can’t think of one and there is no way Nancy is going to stand up and fight now. Republicans will largely get what they want sprinkled with a few crumbs for the poors so the Dems can pretend they tried.
Another poster posted that the first rounds of stimulus cost about $10,000 per man, woman and child. The people got a tiny fraction of that while rich whites scooped up the majority of it.
Source for this?
$3 trillion / 300 million people
What Riverman said. That also doesn’t include all of the trillions the Fed has pumped into the economy either I don’t think.
I thought it was just $2.2 trillion.
Good thing they didn’t just give that money directly to the people. They’d probably spend it foolishly on things like rent and groceries.
plus the eidl/ppp expansion and the two bills before the CARES Act right?
I think the poster who posted it previously said it wasn’t exact and is a slight exaggeration but not by much.
If you really want to be infuriated, go here and search for your biggest local car dealer, real estate developer and law firm. They’ll all be here. And it’s tax free.
