Are We In Danger Of Losing Freeze Peach (And Are We OK With That)?

He started a thread about us losing free speech and all his examples are about protecting trans haters.

You can find his very old lectures on YouTube from before he became A Thing, these are his university lectures on his actual area of research, and they’re pretty good. Pedantic and verbose? Maybe, but probably not far off the typical university lecture by a self important tenured profressor.

But he’s in no way qualified to comment on the broader culture, and I think that’s what you’re noticing. He has the self assured pedantic style of a subject matter expert, but he doesn’t have a better understanding of contemporary political culture than we do. In fact, he’s obviously wrong about a lot of things.

Like the Dawkins reference at the top of this thread, being smart at one thing doesn’t make you qualified to talk about other things let alone smugly orate on them.

Peterson is the right wing version of finding out about an artist because of a hit new song than realizing nothing else in their discography is like that. He’s The Mars Volta of grifting/intellectual discourse.

That’s the case for basically everybody who classifies themselves as a public intellectual too.

People gotta stop worshipping fallible people as though they are infallible. It’s how cults start.

To me he’s more like Milli Vanilli. He aspires to be truly amazing but can’t pull it off so he looks the part, mouths some bullshit and figures that he can pull the wool over your eyes on his way to stardom.

EDIT: I know Milli Vanilli is a duo. Who do you think I am, Jordan Peterson?

My first post was full of actual solutions. You brushed over it.

This is an “all lives matter” dodge.

Peterson rode that shit to the bank too and even he knew he wasn’t describing the law accurately. It doesn’t matter if your followers are dumb as shit and you play to their preconceived biases.

Btw that’s not a defense of Peterson. I think I was accused of that once way back on 22, when I said it’s obvious he doesn’t really believe most of the bullshit he’s spewing. People naturally thought that was a defense, whereas my stance is that makes it waaay worse. It’s one thing if you’re tricked into selling your soul to the devil, but it’s entirely another thing if you search out the devil and harass him while he’s having dinner or doing his laundry at the laundromat or whatever and get hella belligerent trying to offer your soul at a discount.

IMO it’s clear that what Jordan P does believe is that his own towering genius never got the attention it deserved in the past and there’s probably all kinds of career grievances and possibly a teenage rejection from one of Canada’s current progressive female voices that are driving a lot of his glee at spearheading a modern cult.

lol you talk like a walking right wing meme. The tough guys in rural areas don’t need their Frappuccino blah blah blah, no one said they needed Frappuccino you clown. Heat and running water isn’t a Frappuccino or call of duty

Lmaooo you still don’t know what the Canadian law is and keep saying they force you to use pronouns. Like you’re typing on a device with internet capability, just google and stop being so an idiot that seems to have worms in his brain

Again will I get arrested for using he/she in Canada?

Never mind I see people have linked the law to you and explained it, maybe you’ll read it instead of blindly guzzling what these right wing grifters dole out to you

Silly me for believing what I heard about Canada. I still say speech laws are a slippery slope. Also, I accused him of either not being sincere or illiterate because he thought I said Dawkins’ constitutional rights were violated. I said nothing of the sort

I apologize that you’re going to get some (mostly?) half baked lame posts from me. I’m probably much more your “average” American in that my diet of political news consumption or any news for that matter (such as covid, etc.) is nowhere near most people here. I don’t read and post about news and politicians 24/7 the way many of you guys do. I simply don’t have the time. If you guys don’t feel I serve as a useful barometer for what most people’s political IQ is (admittedly quite low) then you can ignore or ban me from the site altogether. Most of my posts are intended to create discussion and some are to test my own ideologies in one direction or the other if taken to their logical extremes. I’m guessing I’m in at least in the 90th percentile of progressive minded posters here. I care a great deal about the rights of trans people’s rights, minorities, climate change, money in politics, corruption, BLM, wealth inequality, etc. and many times I’ll post an idea or thought that is in direct opposition to my own beliefs in order to collect cogent rebuttals to arguments I hear in real life that sometimes stump me

But for the most part, I don’t find this site to be useful when it comes to dialogue as I thought it would be when it first went up. Other than a few posters such as Mr.Wookie, sometimes yourself, JohnnyTraunt, and others (I don’t want to leave out but can’t think of their handles offhand), most posters couldn’t care less about having a serious dialogue or educating others. They’re just here for a circle jerk fest to ideas they oppose. This site is probably best used by me (if at all) to check in on news (some posters seem incredibly quick and good at immediately posting salient news as it happens). But like I said, I don’t have time to be on here 24/7 and many will be glad to hear I won’t be around for a while again

He’s trying to make it sound as if I’m okay with trans people being harassed at work when that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s the type of disingenuous debate that not only occurs, but is encouraged here

Here’s another real genuine good faith attack as well. My main goal is to try and protect trans haters  :joy:

Well, that depends. Have you learned a lesson yet about how some information you hear online might be coming from an insincere source that wants to mislead you?

If this were true you’d be orders of magnitude better at identifying right wing bullshit. Sorry to burst your bubble.

That’s possible if so, sorry. The personal attacks are what catch my eye first. I should probably learn to ignore them. I missed RegretS excellent first post as well

I was forced to listen to a couple hours of Peterson interviews, lectures, etc., and that’s exactly what he does. I find his views abhorrent and disgusting. Nevertheless, he “trying” to explain his conclusions and maybe I give too much respect to professors and educators. There are truths to what he says, but then he stretches that truth to reach ridiculous (in my mind) conclusions, but I think he should be heard out and then rebutted by another educator. Because he isn’t taken seriously at all is why (I think) he has picked up so many followers that we will now have a hard time getting past. Same with Trump. When you respond with hysteria instead of intellect, their popularity grows

There you go again. Calling people dumb. Most people who know me would call me a lot of things before they’d say I’m dumb. I’m just not up on news they way political junkies are. This represents like +90% of Americans. There is a difference between being ignorant and dumb. I hear about Canada enacting a law making it illegal to do x. I don’t research it because it doesn’t effect me, but I hear bits and pieces of the uproar Peterson is creating over it
