Are military enlistees victims of the system, culpable for American imperialism, heroes, villains, or some combination of the above?

Fundamentally the biggest problem was that poor countries had oil. It was never going to work out well for most of the people in the region.

You misunderstood my post.

“Sure” was an agreement, poorly expressed.

And if FP wants to look for the roots of the problems in Vietnam he should namecheck France (also joinlty responsible in the ME for the creation of Syria and Iraq).

But of course France gets a pass on a mainly US forum with lots of anti Brit sentiment.

For sure. I’m not attempting to absolve the current MIC.

The real question underneath all these discussions is can a country or group of persons in power make more ethical decisions without ceding power to another country or group who will take advantage

Should we give credit to the Trump administration for their seeming disengagement from ME adventurism?

The only reason there’s anti-Brit “sentiment” here is because there are some very anti-American brits who are extremely defensive about Britain and completely blind to that.

Essentially no one in the US hates Britain. And lots of people are anti-French!

I think you’re wrong about that and others have told you that before.

Brits are way less patriotic than Americans, in total and on this forum.

Maybe in 50 years time when the US has crumbled and its imperial aspirations collapsed its population will be more realistic about its place in the world.

Hopefully soon I’ll be able to get defensive about Britain and France, big efficiency savings for unstuck.

And yet you’re all so incredibly thin skinned about criticizing Britain/UK/whatever. And we’re on a forum that’s virtually dedicated to dragging the US.

Eta: you all doesn’t include pyatnitski. Never seen it from him.

You have that chip on your shoulder, and I’ve never understood where it comes from.

We don’t like Yanks accusing us of excessive patriotism, that’s true, and it should be obvious why.

But you’re just trolling now anyway.

I’m not trolling. I don’t know if there’s some nuance around the word “patriotism” but you’re the one with the chip. You cannot let a slight against Britain go.

Pretty much this.

I am on vacation. It is 6:30 am, I plan to go back to sleep, wake up around 10, ski all day, then possibly write a real answer later this afternoon PST. If the thread gets locked before I can, then you’ll go yet another day without the question being answered. Again.

Happy Thanksgiving y’all.

Where’s your evidence for that?

Don’t tell me your arse is still burning for being memorable owned by 57OnRed, who you weirdly brought up yesterday apropos of nothing.

What? Owned? I dislike him because he’s a war fetishist and argued with him a lot. I don’t know what you’re taking about.

And I’m not doing a research project here. We’ve been through this a half dozen times.

Ok, there is no evidence, just some baseless shots. nbd

It’s funny though that you imagine the USA is anti-Brit. Aside from Canada it’s almost certainly the country USA’ers are most pro.

Yanks in general or the ones here?

I’m not even the teeniest bit mad. You’re extremely adversarial, especially lately.

That is true and there are good reasons for it.

Both. People talk shit about the UK here almost entirely because of you and for your benefit.

I think one has to consider the possibility that Obama’s policies were an overall net positive on this subject. I’m not sure we can ever really know. Even Bernie is pro drone.

The Iran deal proved that his admin understood the only way to avoid or reduce the inevitable backlash was through diplomacy.

Yeah, because I’m literally the only Brit who posts regularly in the politics threads lol (apart from Churchill recently).

Ever wonder why that is, despite there being many in other parts of Unstuck?
