True. It will need grassroots organizing and funding. Doubly difficult.
Donāt cry. Organize. Or something like that. Or Direct Action Gets the Goods. Thatās another one.
Iām up for just about anything within a reasonable distance (SoCal). Food-not-Bombs is a good option imo, but whatever. If anyone wants to do anything and is looking for company, post in here.
Hi @microbet, do you have any experience with Food Not Bombs? Iām already doing something similar, but just without any affiliation. I am interested in pivoting my current work into a FNB chapter, if you or anyone wants to join up then we can discuss further.
Helpful info:
- Iām in process of partnering with a local pastor to scale donation capacity (by teaming up with her volunteers, sheās also going to let me cook out of her church kitchen. Cooking, packaging, and storing meals for 60 people out of my small home kitchen is not easy)
- Have support of a local woman named Linda Hess who ran a large food-donation-logistics charity for years. She has so many commercial food donation connections. Her charity is called Urban Harvester
- Have a donation partnership with nearby charity called Friends In Deed. They run a food pantry but also have a womenās room that is always looking for ready to eat food.
- I have a Restaurant Depot membership so itās easy to buy cheap ingredients in bulk, if necessary.
I am in NELA. Letās do this.
Iāve worked with Food Not Bombs like 5 or 6 times. Iāve just shown up and gotten put to work. I like how itās just like that without signing up for anything.
Iām in the South Bay.
Iām more often than not available Friday-Sunday and some on the other days. Give me a time and place and assuming Iām free, Iāll show up.
I am also in.
I looked through the steps of starting a Food Not Bombs chapter and it seems pretty straightforward. We could also not affiliate ourselves with them and still do cooking/food donations. While I appreciate the vegan touch, itās very cheap and easy to make a LOT of food using an affordable cut like pork shoulder or beef chuck. Goes a long way.
Let me look into securing a commercial kitchen, so we donāt have to go to the church. Iāll make some progress this weekend. Maybe we can do an UP fundraiser and raise a couple hundred bones to get this thing off the ground. Cc @LFS
The internet tells me there are some FnBs who serve meat. Vegetarian, rather than vegan maybe?
Iāll donate to anything yāall set up
I expect a lot of FnBs hook up with some kinds of grocery stores, wholesalers, restaurants who are donating imperfect food or w/e. I know people went out to get donated food, but I never did that part.
vegan chili is pretty easy to make in bulk and you can use things like sweet potato as a meat substitute
Got a decent recipe? Used to make a mean chili but Iām off red meat now.
That is definitely what the group we went to in Silver Lake was doing.
I think getting our feet under us on our own before becoming an open/public FNB chapter would be a good idea.
My wife makes very good chili w/o meat. Itās beany. Thereās nothing I consider weird in it. I will get the recipe. I donāt know if it starts vegan, but sprinkling shredded cheese on top is a must imo.
We should all meet at a Silver Lake FnB session and then we can talk afterwards.
Iāll find it when Iām done working
I used to cheat and use chicken stock, but vegetable stock works fine too, called it ādirtyā vegan
Thatās a good idea. I cannot do this Sunday, but the 17th would work.
As far as I can determine Iām free on the 17th.
17th good for me. Itās on the calendar. Iāll see you guys there, looks like it starts at 2pm and you should DM the organizer on FB or Insta to get signed up.
I canāt do the 17th. If it got pushed back to the 24th I could do that. I will throw in some $$ either way. Who do I talk to about that?
Well, on the 17th weāre just volunteering. If this thing is really happening I think the 17th and then also the 24th would be good. Even if nothing is ready to move on a new chapter or whatever, there can be another meeting coinciding with the Silverlake event.
