What do you think about the relative offense of dismissing people and their arguments without having bothered to read them vs name calling?
A lot of the rancor on the site now is some people being furious over what they’ve imagined that other people have said and other people furious that no matter what they do they are dismissed without any real consideration.
I didn’t actually say you were biased, just that that’s a bullshit ban, imo both by nature and length. If you were more willing to provide clear justification for bans, it might be easier to have a discussion. Obviously, if the justifications remain in the impenetrable black box of Wookie’s Private Thoughts & Feelings, it’s going to be difficult to appraise them accurately.
But regardless, the posts I’ve seen quoted in connection to this ban do not, in my opinion, warrant a week-long ban. I don’t even consider them banworthy at all, but if you absolutely must, one or two days is clearly more appropriate.
For the record, I am mulling things over to prepare a response. I wish the discussion didn’t have to take place amid all the sniping, I think it’s very interesting.
The scare quotes are accurate. I wasn’t upset. I was explaining what happened and how your snide comments turn otherwise friendly discussions hostile.
Here I was explaining stuff that had to do with what you’re doing now, not reading and understanding what is being discussed and dismissing it sarcastically.
Yup, I don’t know how to get that trust back that is gone. If you don’t think the mods are acting in good faith then every action is viewed through the “they are trying to screw me” lens and we end up where are now. Groups so disillusioned that the only option that makes sense to them is to leave.
I know how that feels, I left when I felt this place was too radical about encouraging violence against people.
Hopefully, someone will convince the Greg and Z to declare ownership and do a reboot of Unstuck so we can start again.
I think temp-bans should be used to give someone the night off when they’ve become too belligerent. Is a week too long? Perhaps. But the basic idea of giving someone time to cool down or sober up or whatever has merit. And people need to learn to not take it so personally when that happens.
Combine this with the fairly standard idea of escalating punishments for repeat offenders, and that’s why we’re here, so obviously it’s a bullshit ban when you leave out history and what Marty actually said.
A week off is never just a cool off. It’s meant as a punishment. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the lines drawn here divide down those who believe in retributive justice and those who do not.
It’s not dishonest. You haven’t read what I wrote or followed the conversation well enough to know whether or not anything I’ve said is true or not. The truth is that you turn pleasant conversations unpleasant and the truth is that not reading posts and then being sarcastic about them is frustrating if not disrespectful. I don’t pretend to not have friends on the site and I don’t pretend not to speak to and about my friends differently than to people I don’t like. My friends are on both sides of whatever “teams” you would divide people into. (I will note that I modded my friends the same and challenge anyone to suggest otherwise)
Lots of fairly standard ideas are bad and fail to accomplish their stated goal. To the extent that a ban ‘sends a message’, it sends the same message regardless of length. If the message has no effect, that only underlines the ineffectiveness of temp-bans for this purpose.
And I understand it’s some kind of affront to your dignity to ask you to specify what marty posted that merited a week-long ban, but I’ll continue to say, quite truthfully, that none of the posts I’ve seen referenced look to warrant it, history notwithstanding.
