About Moderation (old original thread)

I don’t think we do votes anymore here, that’s a shitlib thing. We’re back to the meet all of our demands or we’ll make life miserable until our colleagues give up and give us what we want thing.

I’d consider moderating for at least a couple months if we are that desperate for new ones. I’m not easily caught up in drama and just want people here to tolerate each other enough so that we can go back to being a place of compassionate and intellectual discourse.

I would consider it as well.

Ive generally managed to stay out of the drama. I do however have a clear and stated preference for more assertive modding. I thought PC did a great job and would likely continue in that spirit.

Started RFC:

Wait, there’s a new site? I figured those filthy, commie, hippy trolls were just causing trouble. I figured the resolution from the shitlib bleeding hearts would be to lease the guest house (free of charge)here. Was there an announcement?

Self awareness at an all time low on this forum

I’m in the satire business, not the trolling business. I’m sorry that you got rustled by a satirical use of shitlib but as you probably* (subject to correction) didn’t/don’t give a fuck about the dozens or hundreds of times that term gets thrown around here at other members, I’m not going to feel too bad about that. Please cry me a river about me being Bad In All The Ways That Wookie Et Al Are Bad. It’s a temporary indulgence in the aftermath of what you people said and did behind people’s backs. Check my posting history before the last few days, while I sometimes comment on this stuff, the worst thing I say is that people are being petty and childish, but I never/seldom? call specific people out, and more often than not, if you can believe it, I’m addressing bOtH sIdEs. I have acknowledged the possibility that some of the criticisms of current moderation are may be valid. What I have said, and I will continue to say, is being part of something greater than yourself sometimes requires letting things go even if you believe you’re right, even if you are right, especially over something that shouldn’t (loaded term I know) be that important.

For example, I believe I’m right, I’m right, but I’m letting this go.

Why does the throttle prevent deletion or editing of posts?

To prevent people from using the edit feature to engage in a protracted conversation back and forth.

I can’t answer @kerowo n the other thread due to the time limits, but the understanding when I self-banned was that I could at any time ask for my account to be re-opened, or I could come back as a different user name. I left in good standing. I didn’t want to bother the mods/admin so I opened a new account. I wanted people to know it was me. I am not circumventing a temp self ban.

I just want to shout out @anon46587892

He is obviously pissed at how it’s going here, almost quit, but refuses to let this place fail and instead is putting in a bunch of his time to make sure it lives.

Hugest of huge props and thanks.

The rest of us are incredibly lucky.

@skydiver8 @MrWookie

Please unban this account. We need some discussion if you are reversing the informal practice of allowing gimmicks to read and like while banned. Riverman, Marty, Jman, me, JT, Ked, churchill, etc were all allowed to read and often even post while banned. Jman was voting in polls while banned. Let’s keep this consistent or start an RFC to change what has become precedent.

oh come on y’all LITERALLY FAKED this too

Before that vic gimmick got banned, it made a post calling marksman a lying, lying, liar, asserted that he had a hardon for authority, implied that he was Wookie’s minion, that he should raise a blue lives matter flag and that he was akin to a “braindead Republican”. (This post was quickly deleted).

I’d be curious to learn how these kinds of remarks would be handled through a philosophy of horizontal moderation in a different sub forum.

Thanks. I just want to be part of a non-tiny-niche community of people whose company I enjoy, where I can post alongside the likes of @JohnnyTruant and nano. And if that means @microbet gets to tag along as well, then so be it.

As did @realDonaldTrump, which I assume someone other than Donald Trump controls.

Kind of remains to be seen, but personally I’d be inclined to ignore it. I can’t tell you how odd it is to me see these actual literal adults getting so bent out of shape over words on a screen. I’m kind of working on a theory (that I think I briefly outlined on four once) that online activity fundamentally fuels a narcissistic outlook and that this means negative experiences sting more online than they would IRL, because IRL you have a natural understanding of other people as subjects, whereas online more or less lulls you into thinking of them as objects. If going online can be compared to playing a game, I suppose it would be like the game suddenly calling you an asshole. It might ruin the experience.

Like, it’s good and nice to be pleasant and all, and I generally try to be, but when I see people, adults, people with jobs and kids and responsibilities screeching about HE CALLED ME A MEAN NAME I really do struggle to understand what they’re going through. By and large, I go through nothing like that, regardless of what I’m called. People’s actions online can anger me, sure, if someone is persistently disingenuous or intellectually dishonest etc, but name-calling, shit-flinging, etc, I just do not see how people can even begin to care.

There’s a difference between a self-ban and a ban for misconduct. I’ve never done anything while banned other than read posts.

When I had issues with moderation. I don’t recall making a gimmick account to get around any temp-ban.

I’m not wholly unsympathetic to some of the arguments of various aggrieved parties in this fight, but I’d be happier if people took the time off to plan how they’re going come out swinging when the ban is up rather than what looks like impulsive rage-posting. I’m not anti-bomb-throwing, but if you’re going to throw bombs, pick your target carefully.

Just a basic, basic effort to demonstrate some kind of good faith and willingness to work with the community would have been nice. Instead we get demands to let Victor duck bans and spam the board with insults and this deranged gaslighting defense of Fidgit’s blatant trolling.

I’m sympathetic to the idea of an indie subforum but my god people acting like toddlers are not winning me over. Have any of you put any kind of effort to try using the RFC system? Did you ask any of the staff for help making that happen?
