About Moderation (old original thread)

Well, it’s hard to read it as anything but dismissive. Sorry if it wasn’t meant that way, but it seemed like the most obvious meaning behind it.

I approved the flag with my genitalia in my hand at the urinal at work so I wouldn’t think to hard over it lol. Sorry.

Ha ha! Impressed you can fit your genitalia in one hand. Nice multitasking.

I believe you when you say that it was a joke but I didn’t read it like that at the time. A good reminder that tone does not come across always on the internet. A reminder to both posters and readers.

I mean, from my perspective it feels like you came in to the convo with sweeping generalizations about most of the community here and accused liberals of being condescending and acting in bad faith. That’s going to rub people the wrong way even if it wasn’t your intention.

FFS he was responding to a post that had this quote in it.

Not only that I was responding to a “sweeping generalization,” but somehow, it “seems I come in with sweeping generalizations about most of the community here” when I go out of my way repeatedly to talk about my own personal experience, to make clear I’m not talking about anyone specific here, and I even talk about a lot of my personal experiences that have nothing to do with this forum. Like I said, I put a lot of effort into describing my own personal experiences clearly and without using inflammatory language, and someone still finds a way to take it personally and take shots at me over it. I guess it’s true that hit dogs holler.

I guess I’d let it slide if it was a one-time thing, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a good-faith post from Trolly.

Imagine I go into a golf forum and say “I can’t even have a conversation here it’s so toxic. Golfers in my personal life experience are rude and post in bad faith —not specifically talking about anyone here, tho!”

You really think that’s not going to generate a flip response or two?

Just stop.

First, you’ll notice that, while you said almost the same thing as Trolly factually, I took the time to reply to you. “Don’t be openly rude and snarky and in bad faith and more interested in scoring points than conversation” isn’t a high bar to clear.

Direct to this latest point, that’s been my conclusion over many months of observing the forum and in particular this thread and related threads, not just these individual responses. It’s pretty obvious to me and has been for some time. I don’t know what leads you to conclude otherwise.

That said, it wouldn’t be the first time on UP I pointed out behavior towards me I had a problem with or that was not in any sense of community-- and behavior that seems to be part of a pervasive pattern directed at other people as well-- and people made excuses for that person. If that really is going to be a pattern here then I should just move on, because I’ve seen where that kind of in-group / out-group stuff leads in communities like this, and it’s never anywhere good.

I took the time previously to write out my thoughts on all that and how we can patch things up because, despite my misgivings about 2p2 and some of you, I like most of you just fine and think building this place into a healthy community is a good idea. But I’m not foolish enough to think I can singlehandedly change anything. I have places I can go where I can describe my personal experiences without being shit on and without the shitters being defended as Actually Good Guys. I’d hoped for better than that here, but every time I dip my toes in, it seems like that’s just the way it’s going to be.

I acknowledged in my post that it might not have been your intention to rub people the wrong way and you flat-out accuse me of posting in bad faith. Unreal.

Not to generalize (hint: I’m finna generalize), but damn it seems like everyone in this forum has a dramatically overinflated sense of the extent to which they are good faith posters.

eta: except for @beetlejuice, of course. His sense is perfectly inflated.

No, 99% of posts are good faith.

It’s just that “bad faith” is used 'round these parts to mean “thing I don’t like.” Same with “troll” and “gas lighting”. These are snarl words (R.I.P @-Sabo).

Does anyone know how many people post here regularly? If you need a definition let’s say at least one post per day on average.

Isn’t trolling inherently posting in bad faith?

I’m not sure about inherently, but yeah trolling is a species of bad faith.

There’s lots of kinds of trolling, because trolling it one catch-all term for different things. If you go onto a message board for a rival sports team and go taunt them while rocking an avatar of your team and making no bones about that, that’s trolling, but it’s not really bad faith, because you quite probably mean what you’re saying.

A phrase I’ve seen a few times is “light trolling”. What’s your view of this and how would you define it?
