TPM was the only prequel I liked. All my friends thought the Yoda/Dooku fight was great but man that was such a damn corny scene. Lucas is a great writer and world builder but when it comes to filmmaking and dialog he leaves a lot to be desired. The ST had the opposite problem.
As for watching clone wars to get background oh Ahsoka, you can do that, but Rebels is really the lead up to Ahsoka. Ahsoka is a much bigger character in Clone Wars but you don’t get much of the needed background other than she was Anakin’s apprentice.
Ahsoka the show really is just a live action 5th season of Rebels. You don’t need to watch Clone Wars then Rebels in that order, but you certainly can if you want to put in the time, but if you’re trying to get caught up for Ahsoka you’d get much more background watching Rebels.
Back in 2019, Lucas said that “Jar Jar is the key to all of this,” confirming that the loveable character is his personal favourite.
Perhaps this is because he was the first fully CGI-created character in a live-action film, so he’s a pretty important part of film history. Or maybe it’s because he’s a sweet angel.
But maybe, just maybe, it’s because he’s a Sith Lord.
His hand gestures – No, Jar Jar Binks isn’t your Nonna who talks too much with her hands, but he does use a lot of hand gestures when he’s trying to convince somebody. Coincidence? Or is he using the Force mind trick?
He gave power to Palpatine – Jar Jar is the sole reason Palpatine was able to assume absolute power during the intergalactic emergency. Is this because he was in cahoots with Jar Jar? Or is Palpatine just a pawn in Jar Jar’s master plan?
Yeah the dialogue is generally incredibly bad. I think it has to do with most scenes being very, very short and everything being CGI. Makes it much harder for even good actors like Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor to act well.
This is especially evident in attack of the clones. And of course, Hayden Christensen is just a bad actor period. His filmography after star wars is just sad.
Is this an opinion based on only looking at the filmography? Have you seen his other work? I will retract in advance and say I respect your opinion if you’ve seen his other work and think it stank all around.
For his role in Life As A House, for example, he rightfully earned Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations, as well as the National Board of Review’s award for Breakthrough Performance of the Year.
I thought he was excellent in Jumper, too, but that’s a sci-fi/fantasy nerd taste for sure.
I know Hayden initially got a lot of shit for the prequels, but that hate has definitely softened a lot over the years as people realized the problems with the prequels went much deeper than that. Every actor who took part in those films ended up seeming terrible. He just happened to be a relatively unknown actor given one of the biggest roles in cinema at the time and then handed a completely godawful script. I feel like as an actor he gets an incomplete grade.
I’m sure backlash against the prequels torpedoed his career beyond just his talent. It’s nice to see him getting some action in the TV shows with a competent script writer and director.
If those had been Natalie Portman or Ewan McGregor’s first role, I’m pretty sure people would have cast them aside as well.
I was thinking that too. As well as Samuel L but he basically played his normal self as a Jedi which was pretty awesome. I know we’re getting a bit tired of rehashing old timelines but I would probably really enjoy a Mace Windu spinoff.
I guess that would depend for me on the timeline. If they wanted to do a pre-prequel series then maybe that would be okay, but wouldn’t probably work to have Samuel L. back in the role, which would make it difficult to recreate the Mace Windu experience. But if they bring another dead character back as not dead, I will burn Utica to the ground.
Windu does turn up during the Dooku arc on Tales of the Jedi.
I’ll freely admit to having seen none of his other work, just seemed very unremarkable on imdb. I very much agree with Koss’ post so I can believe that he’s performed better in subsequent movies and shows. He just always struck me as the worst of the actors in the prequels.
Agreed. He’s believable and seems somewhat like an actual person, a foreign concept for almost every other character. Though many of his linesv are incredibly cheesy.
I’m not going to argue there, but I mean there are few actors who could stand toe to toe with Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Frank Oz, etc. They are titans of acting prowess. So he probably got the short end of the stick there, too, just by being juxtaposed against the few people in history who could make that material work.
Anyway I’m not fussing with you, just taking umbrage for my boy Hayden. I’ll never stop suggesting people give Jumper a shot. He reteamed with Samuel L Jackson! And Life of a House really is that good.
Speaking of, just watched the romance development between Padme and Anakin. LOL how badly that was written, my god. Most porn.movies are more believable (not that I would know ofc).
Laughing at the absurd romance is honestly the best part of that movie. If I were to for some reason look up YouTubes of that movie, I would dive straight into those scenes for the comic relief.
