A Call to Ban NotBruceZ for Consistently Endorsing Violence

I was replying to Trolly.

I liked the old politics. I am here from there. As I said - I am approaching this site differently from now on. I have withdrawn my financial support and will rehost my blog elsewhere.

A thousand apologies

What’s going on? I thought we put this to bed yesterday.

Of course we put the cart before the horse when we created a new forum without really agreeing to a specific set of forum rules. But trying to do it the “correct” way proved utterly impossible on the temporary forum for perfectly understandable reasons.

We could spend the next month carefully crafting forum policies and posting rules, putting them to a vote, etc., but in the end that would likely have no impact on the forum going forward. As someone said above nobody really cares about forum policies and rules except to argue about them.

We currently have a small set of mods who are doing a very fine job (the best mod is one you don’t notice). As I understand things, they are largely making judgments based upon their own values of what they desire the forum to be/become. The idea of true community modding has not been enacted (probably a cart v. horse issue). And I am fine with that.

So where does that leave us?

It seems to me that the forum could benefit from an ongoing moderation thread (in addition to the current thread with that name) where members can raise issues pertaining to and/or requesting moderator actions. In addition to responding to members’ concerns, mods could use the thread to gauge community sensibilities on questionable issues/posts that arise. Of course, such a thread would not replace the post reporting function or the back-channel that mods use to talk among themselves. But if this thread has taught us nothing else it is that open lines of communication are important for a well-run forum such as this.

C’mon, man, you’re overreacting.

I wish everyone would stop talking about quitting. A break is often all that’s needed to recharge and relax a bit more.

It wasn’t my intention to encourage you to leave. You’re a good poster. I’ve just been really surprised by your takes in this thread, especially if 2p2 politics is what you miss. The mods back then would have banned NBZ a dozen times by now.

The mods back then have in fact already banned him once or twice.

Not taking a position on this, just sayin’.

that’s fine because it would have been a community-accepted set of rules that he violated. He isn’t violating anything except what cuse thinks should be the norms here. That is not okay to me. I don’t care if it seems like I’m overreacting - this is my “stand” I guess. This was supposed to be a community ruled group from the outset and I do not see it here. The discussions are good here, by JT and others, but I don’t realistically see them going anywhere. I don’t want to live in a mod’s fiefdom, I liked what we had before.Yea, Wookie set the rules, but he did it in the spirit of the community. Always.

This just feels like a “huckabeast” situation all over again that led to this situation we find ourselves in. It smells exactly the same to me. I would move to IMMEDIATELY set a standard of rules around here but it’s likely far too late and will lead to a lot of divisiveness. So whatever. I’m just venting at how this is being handled really poorly.

No one wants you to leave, and it looks like things are mostly breaking your way. Just take a day or two before taking your ball and going home.

This is actually half of the reason I’m not dropping it. But I could, I have that kind of power, it may be called adulthood?

I keep opening the site and being like “hey that thread has lots of new posts, oh, it’s that”.

Grunch, obviously.

We are a new community with messy mod rules by design.

People need to chill out and accept that some contention is built into the design. Threatening to leave every time something goes against your wishes doesn’t solve anything.

As for the root cause I’m less concerned with this, somewhat odd, line people want to draw with “condoning violence”, for a few reasons;

  1. we are a tiny community with little real world effect,

  2. I see a big difference between comments like “he should die” being directed at a public figure vs a board member,

  3. when people make these comments it is venting not a call to arms,

  4. simply stated, at some point actual violence may be the only real world solution. We are not there yet but drawing live for it.

  5. a year ago I was still in the “civility is good” camp and was widely mocked by this community. Yet here we are drawing a civility line which seems a little arbitrary.

I guess the question is, is it the community’s stance that we only allow MLK-style debate and refuse all Malcolm X-style debate?

If your takeaway lesson from that experience was “actually, civility is bad,” then you sort of missed the point.

That wasn’t my takeaway but the argument at the time was “we are at war” and that the other side doesn’t care about civility so nor should we.

Under that rubric, hand wringing over vague threats of violence seems odd.

I’m still in the camp that the long game solution has to be a return to civility and respect for the other side. I’ve just been convinced that in the short term this has to be put aside.

If you legitimately can’t tell the difference between that and this, then I’m not sure what to tell you. Try visiting 8chan if you want a forum where no one cares about civility.

That’s a weird take as I was the one arguing for civility.

My desire to not have threats, implied or otherwise, is really simple. I don’t want to post on a forum that ends up on an FBI watchlist. It was the same way on 2+2 when people would post implied threats of violence against the president. I was doing them a f****** favor when I deleted them and handed them tempbans.

Fair point. We obviously don’t want people advocating violence.
