Purportedly caused by an earthquake, which created a landslide, which then blocked a river until the temporary earthen dam burst.

I wonder why they only had seconds of warning? I guess it was a landslide that dammed up the river for a while, then it broke all at once. There is nowhere those people could have run to.

Maybe your best option is in a car with the windows rolled up. Pray it floats to the top long enough to get stranded on some rocks downstream or something.

The birds new what was coming.

all those people running :sob:

can you imagine what it looked like on the ground?!?

There was a small earthquake (M 4.4), which triggered a landslide into a tributary of the Bhote Koshi, a little upstream from Kyirong Port, the border post to Nepal (which was completely destroyed). The landslide temporarily dammed the river, and the dam broke just a few minutes later.

So, contrary to what we all initially thought, this was not a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).

Assuming this is accurate, that explains the lack of warning. Incredible what just a few minutes of damming the river can release.

My god that water sloshing around by the camera the last few seconds.

The casino spam guy probably thinks he hit the sucker jackpot in this forum.

I hope that your pony escaped the landslide.

I’ve already transferred him $86,000 dollars.

If this just happened out of nowhere and I didn’t know what was coming behind it, I’d like to think I wouldn’t be standing at waters edge taking video, and instead be moving as far away from the banks and and far uphill as I could get.

i’ve watched as many videos of it as the algorithm will give me, people react so differently in situations like this.

the main one, the one where it shows the wall of water just crush everything, those people running at the bottom… ugh :broken_heart: none of them were slowing down to film.

i told myself that it would be quick for them, the force would knock them out or they’d hit something relatively quickly and be knocked out. but i dunno, some of those people died a horrible, horrible death in terror completely randomly on a sunny wednesday morning  nothing you can do except run for your life and die anyway.

it also reminds me of those people that stand and record the avalanches that they think are too far away to matter. that one video of the family gazing in awe until it’s too late and the snow rushes over them, i’m pretty sure that one will really help me in any situation like that. everyone else can record it, me and whoever i’m with are outta there.

but that’s only if you have a couple seconds to process and think. these people today took off immediately and it didn’t matter… fuck.

Yeah, had the same thought, really hope it was quick for the people who were completely fucked. Like maybe the force of the water knocks you unconscious or kills you outright, because drowning has to be one of the worst ways to go. Such horrible videos coming out of this tragedy.

These videos are completely insane.

These are some of the most horrific natural disaster videos I’ve ever seen. It looks apocalyptic. Hopefully the people in its path didn’t suffer beyond the unimaginable fear in their last moments.

The second video, of the aftermath, shows how widespread the water was. And the fourth video, of the dam breaking, shows more of its power. Just unimaginably awful :(
