1550 after 4 years seems kind of mid. I guess it depends on how much time he is actually spending.
He’s 2100 lichess rapid but hates playing online. He also does most of his studying without a board just in his head, like learning openings and going through Grand Master games, so he’s got pretty good visualization skills. Not sure why he isn’t stronger over the board
