2025 LC Thread

So here’s a story my wife and son just told me (son is 16):

One of my son’s best friends comes off as a stoner/skater kid. He and another friend were walking in the hall at school and he was doing a bit from a show, pretending to talk on a banana like it was a phone. A teacher saw, but didn’t see the banana, so she thought the kid was just wandering, talking to himself. She contacted the vice principal.

Vice principal approached, saw him with the banana to his ear and asked what he was doing. He kept up the bit, saying, “I’m talking to the boss.”

When the vice principal was approaching, the other friend bolted, so now the vice principal saw this stoner looking kid by himself, saying he was talking to the boss on a banana. Vice principal got three staffers to come and search the kid and his bag for drugs. Didn’t find anything.

For some reason, the kid did not drop the bit, so he was taken to the nurse’s office. Principal called his mom to see if they should be concerned. She didn’t know exactly what he was doing, but his older brother was home and assured them all that he was just being a goof.

I don’t know if the kid is an idiot or a hero for not dropping the bit.

I am one to scoff and roll my eyes at old man “they sure don’t make ‘em like they used to” because, yeah ldo they make ‘em better now mostly. But when it comes to these old mules, they may be on to something

behold Maytag washer and dryer

Moms bought these over 25 years ago. I inherited them ~12 years ago when she died. They have never broken down, not even so much as a belt as far as I know, still running strong and work great. They’ve survived at least a half dozen moves, maybe more. Only issue is the dryer doesn’t stop when you open the door.

I read that Maytag was acquired by Whirlpool since these were made, so no idea how good the brand is nowadays (I’ve had bad experiences with Whirlpool shit) but those ads about the Maytag repair guy with nothing to do but fk off all day because they don’t break down were in the nose.

Wifey wants to ditch these in favor of some Samsung front loader “smart” washer and dryer bullshit that probably sends my personal info to the Illuminati but these things may outlive me.

Our Samsung dryer is terrible. The sensor never drys anything thicker than normal clothes. We always have to add a timed dry after it finishes.

She and my daughter complain that “the dryer doesn’t dry fast enough” but I’m pretty sure it’s because they put too much shit in there. I never fill more than 2/3 full to take it easy on the agitator and my clothes dry fine on one cycle eta and I only use low heat except for towels

I have an apartment-sized stacked W/D, and if I wash a full load, I’m generally splitting the wet clothes in half and running two dryer loads. The clothes dry more evenly with less wrinkling, and it doesn’t take much longer than if I tried to dry a full load at once.

make sure to clean the lint out of it, not just the exhaust pipe but the machine itself… that can cause a fire but could also be why it is not drying.

I have a similar 26 year old washer and dryer set. It’s the OG set from when my house was built. Last year the inlet valve failed and our local guy came to fix it. He was working on it and waxing poetically about how well these old machines were built and I think he almost cried because he was so overwhelmed by the pure beauty of a good washer. Like a lover of fine art who got a chance to do a repair on the Sistine Chapel. The man loves his work.

I actively try to buy shit that doesn’t have a touch screen or any digital component. That shit always breaks. Always.

My parents had to change the washer and dryer about 6 years ago and it was a huge mess.

The delivery people couldn’t install it, but just need to deal with the valves (I come from a family of lawyers, no mechanical thinking exists in my family to begin with). Seemed like the house that was built in 1991 was designed for the specific washer/dryer that was installed. Was a huge ordeal updating them.

I’m 36 and absolutely terrified of home ownership.

It is a pain in the ass but YouTube can be a life saver for simple things.

I inherited my parents’ house after renting for decades. I straight up hate home ownership. There are many reasons why, and I’m not going to go into it, but they’re likely many of the same ones you’re thinking of. But rental costs are way out of hand now too, so I’m really stuck with the house unless things change.

Is this the consumer complaints thread? I’d like to complain about how bright headlights are these days, thanks.

This is a great point, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better

I’m pretty stunned that no politician I’ve heard of has campaigned on a “the headlights are too damned bright” platform. Who doesn’t hate getting blinded by super strong LEDs, especially in a world where auto-on high beams are a standard “feature”.

Would be more popular than legalizing marijuana imo.

True. We just got a new car and I’m afraid to use the brights in case there’s an oncoming car 15 miles away.

Does the dryer light turn on when you open the door?

Replacing the switch should be easy. Maybe it’s just stuck and some wd40 will fix it.

Same reason it’s legal to use a lifted f450 monster truck as a commuter vehicle: people delight in being as obnoxious as they can possibly be and America exists to cater to these people. I assume companies will be selling headlight upgrades in the near future so you can up the wattage of those factory LEDs.

It’s very likely the door switch and should be an easy fix. I have the same problem. Bought a switch years ago (inexpensive) and just never got around to replacing it. I did replace the switch on the washing machine and it was easy. Took a few minutes after watching a YouTube video.

Recommend going with actual OEM parts. I’m sure off-brand parts can work fine, but might as well not mess around with an appliance. For the washer switch, I bought a part off of Amazon for like $12 and it probably would’ve worked, but the cabling was too short. So I found a local appliance parts store and bought the real deal for $30. Replaced it in a few minutes.

My washer and dryer are Whirlpools, look pretty much like yours, 20+ years old. Other than the switches, a cog broke in the agitator, which was an easy fix. I do think a belt is starting to go in the washing machine, as it’s getting squeaky.

The Louisiana Department of Health will no longer promote mass vaccination, the state’s surgeon general, Dr. Ralph Abraham, told state health workers Thursday.

“The State of Louisiana and LDH have historically promoted vaccines for vaccine preventable illnesses through our parish health units, community health fairs, partnerships and media campaigns,” Abraham wrote in a memo addressed to “LDH Team Members” and obtained by CNN. “While we encourage each patient to discuss the risks and benefits of vaccination with their provider, LDH will no longer promote mass vaccination.”
