The way I think this works is that Costco finds a CC company and says your are going to reduce your fees for us by X if you want to be our exclusive CC company. Eventually, AMEX got fed up getting bent over by Costco and Visa stepped up.

What is the point of @'ing someone in Gmail? When I get @'ed, I don’t get any kind of notification or flag that someone has @'ed me and there is something that requires my attention. The only way I know if someone has called me out is by reading the email, same as I would anyway. I guess it does put the name in a different color and underlined, like a hyperlink, but my sense is that is not the functional point of @'ing.
I think it predates social media using the @ sign to notify someone they are mentioned in a post and just creates an email to link. Probably evolved to where it is now because why email someone from a messaging app? I imagine the email IS the notification…
