2025 LC Thread

Weird thing happened to me. There is an ice cream/hamburger/dairy chain in Texas called Braum’s. Last night I stopped at one and at the drive thru they said:

“Our drive thru is closed. We can only accept cash inside.”

I thought this was weird and I drove off. After a few minutes part of me thought it was some sort of weird robbery scheme where they are trying to lure people inside.

I proceed to drive thirty minutes to my house and stop by another braums. Approach the drive thru and am told:

“Our drive thru is closed. We can only accept cash inside under twenty dollars.” I proceeded to drive off again.

I am a bit perplexed what kind of weird technical glitch that takes down the drive thrus and credit card machines of multiple stores at the same time. Was just weird. I am sure there is an explanation but was really unusual. I have gone to places before where their credit card machine is not working but that didn’t mess with the drive thru. How were they taking orders inside. Why couldn’t they do that for the drive thru?

Could have been something as stupid as someone forgot to pay their monthly internet bill and it took down their POS system. Not sure if it is more or less surprising that multiple franchise locations were down or not. Unclear why they could take orders inside but not at the drive through, unless they have different registers at the drive through than inside or something.

Trip report:

Opened it up to see this:

An inoffensive beige. If you look closely, you can see a hint of an oyster cracker towards the edge at roughly 2 o’clock.

After dishing it up, it’s clear that this is not a “we’re trying to evoke the idea of oyster crackers with normal ice cream components” - there are for-real, whole oyster crackers here.

In terms of taste, here’s where things get pretty anti-climatic, and predicted by @skydiver8, @runout, and @LFS.

Yes, Graeter’s is not interested in making vomit-inducing ice cream, and so they did indeed focus on the nutmeg and cinnamon aspects rather than the meat and chili flavors.

My immediate reaction was that it tasted like eggnog. I don’t think that’s quite right, though. Instead, I think it strongly reminded me of eggnog because I grew up having eggnog that was heavily flavored with nutmeg. I think a normal person, unburdened by my nostalgia, would probably just taste a french vanilla ice cream heavily flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg. Very positive from that perspective - those are good flavors!

As for the oyster crackers, I wouldn’t say they were bad. But they were certainly unnecessary. I get the novelty of it, but you could easily replicate the effect by just crumbling up some saltines in french vanilla ice cream. And if you think the idea of crumbled saltines in ice cream is kind of dumb, then I think you can accurately assess the effect of adding oyster crackers to ice cream.

Overall, it was decent and consistent with Graeter’s making very good ice cream. Definitely not my favorite flavor from them, but I would eat it again. In fact, I will have to eat it again because more than half of the pint is left and every other member of my family flat out refused to even try it after seeing the label.

Sounds pretty lame, you can’t release something like this and make it normal ice cream.

Well, it turns out they can do exactly that, and then convince poor schmucks like me to buy it in a desperate attempt to gain internet likes.

Are there any savory ice creams out there?

I actually saw a display for this in my local Kroger. Thank you for biting the bullet and trying it so I don’t have to. Regret that I only have one like to give.

Missing a little something…

I was trying to think of meats that tasted good cold and could only really come up with bbq chicken. BBQ Chicken Ice Cream just sounds weird though…

You got my heart, buddy

In gilroy, they do a garlic ice cream at the garlic festival.

Some people claim to like it but I just assume thats because they have lived in California too long and have become default minions of satan.

Some of the paleterias out here have avocado ice cream and a few other interesting flavors. Also chili mango is definitely a thing.

It’s actually really good.

avocado ice cream is dumb, who the heck eats ice cream and thinks you know what would make this great, a vegetable. (oh you think it’s a fruit well argue in the comments)

This is pretty huge. I seemingly had a heart attack at some point in my past and have a small piece of dead heart tissue. Repairing that could go a long way in preventing future heart attacks, so that would be nice. Im sure Kaiser will get around to covering it in about 30 years

Seems like a worthy PR stunt.

Any of the more physics oriented nerds comment on this?

Impressed by them being able to find funding.

I am not a physics nerd but would bet a lot on “not gonna happen”. Also note that “supplying energy” need not be defined as “producing more energy than it consumes”

Yawn. But I am impressed they got funding. Must be Holmes- or Elon-esque con artist behind it.

If they had said that they were going to be operational by 2035 I would give them points for being in line with traditional estimates. If they succeed and power becomes too cheap to meter it’s going to suck for my job though.
