I’ve spent the past couple weeks helping to organize a bus of San Diegans to AZ to canvass for Harris, et al. It’s been an experience that I will hold off on relating until after the election.

Yes, but the continued Swiss cheesing of his brain is a huge obstacle to him becoming some kind of emperor.
The electoral college sucks, but this technical possibility relies on a candidate winning by 1 vote in every state they win and losing 100% of the vote in the states they lose. Not sure it’s a particularly relevant statistic.

I guess for me it’s less about changing minds and more about signaling where things are going and how the rich, powerful people are setting themselves up strategically for the next few years.
SSC isn’t my burner, but my basic nature is to put a lot of trust in rules, norms, and institutions. I take most people at face value and with the assumption of good faith. Even when those people/institutions repeatedly prove themselves to be weak/corrupt/malignant/etc.

But I guess I have a fundamentally different view. It’s more like the facade is falling, not that the internals are crumbling.

Yeah, I mean one of the things that I admire about you is your clear-eyed realization that “they” are not going to save us so you actually try (and do) to build relationships, community, and mutual aid and all that good stuff that works when institutions don’t.
I am… very, very, not good at that. I’m not particularly resilient or resourceful. I don’t improvise well. I don’t have many skills that would be good in an apocalypse. TL/DR I’m an extremely soft mf’er so I think in many ways I want and even need to keep believing that institutions will keep protecting me because deep down I know I can’t protect myself.
Anyway, I’ll be up in Bezos’ neighborhood later today so I’ll give his house the bird when I walk by or something just to feel a little better.

My big fear scenario is that if Trump steals the election you will have millions of people protesting in cities and that will inevitably lead to frustration and chaos. Trump then decides that he has to crack down for the sake of law and order, which becomes tit for tat, and we quickly unravel into a dictatorship.
Scenarios where Trump wins outright and then decides he wants to run for a third term is less plausible.
The modern American left is awful at protest and organizing. If Trump wins by stealing it there will strongly worded letters, tiny scattered protests in the hundreds of people, and the pushback will consist entirely of people posting witty memes on X thus boosting Elon.
The only threat of violence is if Harris wins.
Trump won’t be running for a third term. He simply won’t be bothering with a pesky election. He just wont leave office. SCOTUS will rule that America is in a war state due to brown people immigrating so he has the constitutional authority to not hold an election. .
There is no motivation for the SCOTUS to declare Trump king. Why didn’t they just throw out election results in 2020 if that was their endgame?
They essentially did this in the last term in the Trump vs The United States decision.

Hundreds of people protesting is a bonkers take. I’d expect millions across the country like BLM, pussy hat protests or whatever they were called, etc. The “left” is actually great at protesting, they just never actually accomplish anything after that.
