From where the highway goes to 3 lanes to the exit was about 1.2 miles. If the SUV had gotten into the middle lane right after overtaking the car, the truck would have had to accelerate and cut across two lanes to get to the exit.

If you hadn’t figured it out, I was in the SUV. I would have gotten over, but I hate tailgaters, and I’m doing no favors to someone flashing lights at me.

I’m not gonna brake check, so he got one of these:

sorry ive been holding in this too long but the cell phone in performances discussion is so dumb, anyone thats ever done standup or theater or musical performances will tell you 200 of these blinding blinking flashing lights in your face are extraordinarily annoying and distractingand detract from the performance, thats why they have these policies

Completely agree. As long as you’re passing the vehicle in the middle lane, you’re following the rules.

You also have to account for the possibility of said asshole trying to pass in front of the car, dangerously close, so it’s only logical to allow for even more space before getting over.

I wouldn’t do a brake check, but I might just take my foot off the gas and slow down naturally.

Truck ainec. Not the SUV driver’s problem that truck driver failed to plan ahead by getting in the left lane right before he needed to exit.

I do this all the time.

I don’t touch my brakes but I take my foot off the gas and naturally slow down.

You have to give people grace to get out of the way. Truck is asshole.

This. Flashing lights before the SUV is very comfortably in front of the car is being a dick and the first dick is worse here. SUV should just move over when safe though and not stay in the lane for revenge. Don’t play games when you’re driving at all.

For some reason about 6 months ago I decided that I was sick of aggressive drivers passing me for no reason and would just fucking floor it if some dipshit was driving like an asshole trying to get around everyone.

Let me tell you this did not go well lol. As it turns out those people absolutely do not slow down and will still try to pass you going 80 in a 50, 60 in a 35, etc

At one point I got in two road rage incidents in the same 15 minute drive and we almost caused an accident both times and I was done with that.

It’s funny how China has basically the inverse problem as America. We subsidize demand and restrict supply. They subsidize supply and restrict demand. We can’t rebuild fallen bridges. They build bridges to nowhere. In the most desirable cities in this country, every random Victorian house and park bench is a historic site that can’t be disturbed. There, they’ll bulldoze a 500 year old temple to build an endless skyscraper complex that no one wants to live in.

One of the things that’s fun about driving in Southeast Asia is that everyone is just pulling out in front of each other, cutting people off all the time, people driving the wrong way or whatever that basically everything is normalized. You almost never see road rage

I noticed this in Mexico while driving from Leon to San Miguel de Allende. The roads were more or less a free for all (from my American POV) and no one seemed to care or take anything personally.

I’ve been chill as hell for a long time now and basically never let the aggro drivers get to me, but I used to, so I understand. And teaching my daughter to drive has helped. It’s very obvious that getting mad about other people’s driving and reacting to it is not safe and repeatedly telling your kid that they must not allow that stuff to rattle them while driving has cemented my chillness.

Unfortunately there have been multiple points in the last decade where, if I’d had access to a gun, I wouldn’t be alive rn. It’s hard for me to engage with people who are gun nuts because they are incapable of understanding how guns play into suicide. Depression and suicidal ideations/impulses can hit you fast. Having basically 24-7 access to a gun that requires very little effort to use terrifies me.

Minority opinion, but I voted you the dick because the truck only drove in a way you disliked. He was not doing anything to impede or otherwise affect other drivers. Depending on the speed limit and following distances he may not even have been in the wrong legally.

On the other hand you claimed that you drove with the intent to affect another driver. That distinction seems like the technical definition of being a dick. If you want to argue who was wrong legally you were probably both speeding and there’s a good chance your state has a law designating the left lane on multilane highways for passing, or to keep right except to pass, so that’s a push at best. If you want to argue who’s driving was more socially acceptable you could make a case but it’s going to be subjective, I’d disagree with you, and blocking isn’t exactly good behavior either even though it will get you cheers from the vigilante Karens. I’d also argue that when a road opens up an additional passing lane it’s particularly less acceptable to immediately use it if you’re not going to be quick about passing, in a way that simply passing slowly in an established lane is not.

On another note 1.2 miles is plenty of space to perform a 2-car leap frog pass. If you’ve accelerated to 5 MPH above the car you’re passing it will be done in seconds. Most people would consider +10 MPH a perfectly reasonable speed, so the guy behind you may have been planning to pass the slow car with you at up to +10 if that’s what you went then move back with you, or go +5 with you then +10 to pass you and move back with probably a half mile still before the exit.

And another note #2: some people might flash you to remind you that they exist and it would be helpful to them if you take some action that shouldn’t be a big inconvenience to you. It doesn’t need to be an aggressive thing. And even if it is you’ll be less stressed if you view these things as polite requests instead.

The problem with trying to out stupid other drivers is those people are more stupid than you can possibly imagine.
