California Flat Earther admits partial defeat after trip to Antarctica

A California Flat Earther admitted to a partial defeat after flying all the way to Antarctica to see a pillar of Flat Earth belief destroyed within the space of 24 hours.
The trip was organized by Colorado pastor Will Duffy, who hoped to convince several prominent Flat Earth believers that the world is a sphere â which humans have known since the 5th century B.C. The trip alone was part of the proof: Many Flat Earthers believe itâs impossible to visit Antarctica because the powers that be wonât allow people to journey there and find the edge of the Earth. This, of course, ignores the fact that you can book tours to Antarctica through countless travel agencies.
The trip had to take place at this time of year when the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing its summer. In Antarctica, that means approximately 24 hours of sunlight per day for a few weeks around the summer solstice. Flat Earthers stress that the 24-hour sun does not exist, as in a model where the Earth is flat, the sun must rise and set each day.
Among the group that arrived in Antarctica on Dec. 14 was Jeran Campanella, a YouTuber who lives in Salinas, Calif. Campanella has espoused Flat Earth beliefs for years, among other conspiracy theories, on his popular social media channels. Campanella journeyed from Central California to Punta Arenas, where the group was taken to Antarctica by Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions. They set up cameras and, within the day, the Flat Earth team was forced to stand face-to-face with their cognitive dissonance.
âSometimes you are wrong in life,â Campanella said on a video streamed from the continent. âAnd I thought there was no 24-hour sun. In fact, I was pretty sure of it.â
âI realize that Iâll be called a shill for just saying that, and you know what, if youâre a shill for being honest, so be it,â he later added. âI honestly believed there was no 24-hour sun. I honestly now believe there is.â
Another Flat Earth believer on the trip, Austin Whitsitt, was also eager to get in front of the blowback he knew he was about to receive from his fellow believers. He assured them he tracked the hourslong journey from Punta Arenas, Chile to Union Glacier, Antarctica with a compass to ensure they were actually going south.
âWe have to go back to the drawing board to address the preponderance of evidence,â Whitsitt said of the 24-hour sun observation.
Although Duffy was hoping this would be the âfinal experimentâ to debunk Flat Earth, observable evidence predictably did not convince the Flat Earth contingent.
âI donât think it proves a globe,â Whitsitt said on the livestream. âI think itâs a singular data point.â
âWhat does that mean? You guys are going to have to figure that out yourself,â Campanella said. âDonât listen to my beliefs or my opinions, it shouldnât matter to you. But at least you should be able to accept that the sun does exactly what these guys said as far as circles the southern continent.â
Whitsitt and Campanella were right to assume theyâd be under attack from their community for confirming the existence of the 24-hour sun. For days, Whitsitt has been arguing on social media with conspiracy theorists who are accusing him of faking the entire trip.

Driving on a highway, 2 lanes in the same direction. Car in left lane is going 68 followed by SUV and a truck. Highway expands to three lanes and SUV and truck slide into far left lane and accelerate to 73 to pass car. SUV and truck match speed with truck very close behind SUV. Soon thereâs room for SUV to get over, but will be right in front of car. SUV stays in lane and truck flashes lights. SUV gets enough room to move right ahead of truck, but stays in lane with truck close behind. Truck cuts in front of car an soon moves to right lane and exits.

The other one that pisses me off is the people who floor it to get around you on the right when you turn left onto a four lane road, but you drift right as well because you need to turn right soon, and the speed dickheads get all pissed off when youâre still in front of them.

A two-lane road has one lane in each direction. You shouldnât be trying to turn in this situation even if there were two lanes in each direction.

You get to keep your phone in its pouch in concerts too. But yeah, obviously things are different in schools. They all do things differently, and itâs recognized that itâs easy for kids to get around if they really want to, but this way they schools/teachers need to police it in the same way, and any kid caught using a phone faces steeper consequences because theyâve taken steps to break the rules.
To shift this convo slightly, imo most of the recent move in this direction is in response to the reaction this book generated:
I taught high school for a year and cell phones were a huge problem. There was no policy regarding phones outside of teachers just had to handle it. We couldnât take them and parents were no help for the most part.
If the truck had to get to its exit and thatâs why it passed the car then I think it is still equal. But heaven forbid anyone fucking slow down to get past a car on its right and cut over behind it to exit.
