2024 LC Thread

We are having a discussion about political culture. lol

If you want to debate music or movies we have threads for that and on those dimensions the US waffle crushes Canada.

Not on a per capita basis, fam

I mean just in comedians alone, think of the list of Canadians

Used to be these things were determined by the census bureau, but nowadays anything goes.

Fish, bananas
Old pajamas
Mutton, beef,
And trout

Where I’m going with this is that it seems if you use ethnic fractionalization as your measure, it would be possible to have a country of almost entirely White people with a high score. Same is true of a country of Black people. And both of these things exist (especially the latter). So while it would be technically correct to call such countries diverse, I don’t think it’s what most people mean when they say “diversity” (of course, most people may be wrong).

The problem with this scoring is that I think it counts two White people of different ethnicities as the same level of diversity as a White person and a Black person. I think the latter is “more diversity”, but by fractionalization score they count the same.

According to Paul Schafer, Canadians would take the most musical people and breed them.

Most non Americans do mean ethnicity though, not race. It’s an American thing to be hyper focussed on race.

Ethnicity is real. Race isn’t.

Cool, so what’s the answer to my question?

Most Americans might not recognize that as diverse, but Americans think all black people are the same and all Asian people and all Hispanic people too.

No idea why you seem to think this is a huge gotcha.

There are hundreds of ethnicities of “white”’ people.

I think that thinking that all White people are the same and all Black people are the same is wrong.

I also think that it’s not crazy to think that there is generally more diversity between a White person and a Black person than there is between than a White German and a White Frenchman.

It’s not a gotcha. I just wanted to know the answer. But the basic problem with using that metric is what I described above.

This assumes there is some essential quality to whiteness and blackness.

Well, there is. Whether that’s important is a different question.

Already busting out the “lols” eh.

Music is relevant to political culture in America since the government doesn’t tell us what to listen to. (yet) Another reason why we are more diverse. Of course, that isn’t a data point that Pedantosaurus Flex can fly in and harp on, so you give it no value.

I guess you missed it when Killer Mike took the microphone on live tv in ATL after Floyd was murdered.

Sure as a measure of the amount of melanin in thier skin. Other than that there is nothing.

Yes, but unfortunately that plays a huge role in how other people react to them.

As just one metric, Canada took in way more Syrian refugees as a % of population than the US did. There are lots of Jamaican and other Carribean populations in and around Toronto. Lots of folks from Hong Kong, China, and other parts of Asia (especially on the West Coast). Even among “white people” the Quebecois present a unique enclave. It’s racial/ethnic diversity and the issues presented are not the same as the US, but it not some lily white monolith.

If that were true, white people in the usa wouldn’t get so viscerally angry when I tell them my father and half my lineage is mixed race. Again, this is a stark cultural and racial/ethnic/whatever hoops you need to jump through to label it difference between the usa and canada. I do not really think you have the same issues with race that the usa does and it isn’t because you’re culturally superior, like, that kind of framing is horrible to me

I genuinely have no idea what point you are making with respect to the discussion happening itt right now.
