2024 Election POST MORTEM

I’m sad we didn’t get a chance to see the outcome of an argument I had with SenorKeed back in 2019. I said if Dems won the POTUS but GOP had control of the Senate that a SCOTUS justice would never get a hearing. He said that they would, because the political backlash of breaking that norm would be too costly for the GOP to hold the line.

Economy, its not one sided. (+1obv)

Solidarity?

A lot was said about Trump saying the quiet part out loud, but I think the bold is the same thing, but worse.

Probably not, given the decreasing marginal utility of anything you do. She did pretty great to swing 3 points in swing states against the national headwind that’s 6 points against her, but in order to win, she would have had to have moved the whole national headwind by another 3 points.

Trump is hardly the first person to get away with his crimes. The people who actually pay attention to this stuff instead of whacking a strawman see it happen all the time. Most of them are even poor. Law bros and their sympathizers like me are mostly fine with it not because we expect it to always put guilty people away, but because the hurdles in place have a reason for existing. It’s ok if guilty people get away with it so rights can be upheld, even if he and Biden are the only two people who have this particular right.

The problem comes in with the authoritarian instinct to denigrate the legal system. Those hurdles are in place partially to maintain trust in the system. The legal system puts a lot of effort to maintaining fairness, but it can be undone by edgelords telling everyone that might makes right. I hope that doesn’t happen.

The absolute worst are the Robert Muellers and Merrick Garlands. Biggest failures ever.
Just do the job you were assigned you cowards!!!

It’s not Garland’s job to put Trump in prison.

Huh?

Bluesky experiences some kind of surge in popularity. First time I saw an AOC post there. Few german politicians coming around to it now as well.

That’s why we had a special prosecutor, because the political sensitivity of the case meant that every effort must be made to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

And he appointed that special prosecutor at the WARP SPEED date of…November 2022.

The lawbros did their job: they convicted Trump. It’s not their fault the American people don’t care. Rather, its the fault of the people undermining faith in the legal system. Most of them are Republicans, but there are a few @clovis8’s out there.

Most of these I can guess what they’re about, except for #8. I think it’s about Yglesias’s beef with activists but I can’t suss it out from the text

I think 8 is anti-union.

Maybe anti-union, but I think it’s specifically about teachers and elevating the preferences of the teachers over the interests of the students.

Edit: This might be a reach, but I think a salient example would be keeping schools online during COVID based on teachers’ health concerns, without considering the educational interests of the students.

When will someone FINALLY take those fat cat teachers down a peg.
