Those who indicate that they plan to support former president Donald Trump in the Republican primary in their state are more likely to be creationists, in keeping with his strong support from White evangelical Christians over time. There are too few supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to be statistically significant, but among those who responded, their views were more moderate than those of Trump supporters.

is this not AMERICA?

That graph is bleak. There are more hard core creationists than there are atheists? Really?

Let’s see what the motherfucking pope said about evolution back in 2014

“Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

That “college degree” split is sad.

The East Coast college I went to (or “university” as we say here in socialist Canada) was founded by priests in the mid 1800s. Even in the 1990s when I went to school, obviously in biology class you learned about evolution but the university also had a Catholic girls dorm still run by nuns and attendance at the campus church on Sunday was very high. Way more than half the people I went to college with would say that they believe in God. I assume a fair number would claim that they don’t believe in evolution.

How do you feel knowing that the same poll had 53% of Republicans and 55% of black people (with a small sample size of n=120) saying humans did not evolve?

Americans are a very stupid people as a whole.

There’s lots of stupid people everywhere. Ignorance is the natural state of humans, and it’s hard work to get them to develop critical thinking and analytic skills instead of relying on instinctive reactions and emotionally charged narratives.

I think more relevant insights from the splits are a) younger people tend to believe in evolution, which I assume reflects shifting cultural norms around questioning the church, and b) increasing eduction levels correspond to belief in facts and reason, which calls for no further explanation.

Szn = season?

Sure there are dumb people everywhere but the instinct to deflect a critique of the US let’s them off the hook for creating a uniquely awful society that breeds a uniquely ignorant population.

It’s also true to say there are millions of brilliant kind Americans. But it doesn’t change the fact that their culture is special in its ability to foster the worst in people.

Yeah, for sure. I could go live and work in the US if I want to but I agree with you that it’s a uniquely bad culture.

I cannot stop eating Halloween candy. Will I die?
