It’s not really to do with how good the program is at Go, the guy won with an exploit that works because the program has a gap in its understanding of the rules of Go that is not apparent unless you deliberately try to exploit it. Fixing it is as simple as putting in a “don’t pass if you’re not ahead on stones” instruction.

I guess it’s somewhat interesting to show the vulnerability of reinforcement-learning AIs to edge cases that weren’t in the training set but reporting this as the human “comprehensively defeating” the AI in “a surprise reversal of the 2016 computer victory” is misleading at best. This is not a strategy that defeats the program at Go, it’s a strategy that exposes a bug in it.

GET HIS ASS!!!

Do we know if Alpha Go had this same vulnerability? It seems at least possible their team identified it at some point and plugged the leak. Of course it’s also possible that they didn’t.

Real or Onion?

In the mario kart game of life, banana peels are the rake.

Why would we expect something trained on trawled internet data to be anything other than a toxic shitposter?

Building an AI based on data from the internet is a god damned living breathing experiment in Plato’s cave. The conduct of humans on the internet are the shadows on the wall, and the AI thinks that’s us.

jfc Outlook/Hotmail got really aggressive today. Hotmail was my first e-mail after college and I still use it for online purchases and unimportant account signups - it’s mostly a spam collector. All of a sudden, my phone and PC are giving me notifications of every fucking Hotmail message I get. I just turned off notifications, so hopefully they’ll stop, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to do that, as there are occasions where I would like a notification, like to get shipping updates on purchases or something. I really don’t need to know when AARP sends me a signup offer (a few years too early, thank you) or that there are Elite Singles in my area waiting to meet me.

I noticed today that my Hotmail account let through more spam than usual. It feels like the same thing happens every couple of months.

Those single female AARP members party pretty hard tbh. Maybe you’re missing out.

I actually saw a really good offer in a Facebook ad around Black Friday that I forgot to cash in on. It was like $45 for a five-year membership, plus you get another membership free, so I could have signed up both my wife and I (sorry, single AARP females). I checked their FAQ and it said you can be a member if you’re under 50, but you just don’t get to take advantage of certain age-restricted deals. Maybe the same offer will pop up again this year.
