I dont get people who say “I understand how machine learning works” as a way to dismiss any consideration of “true” intelligence/sentience.

Machine learning models like these have a huge amount of complexity in a black box. Like billions of non-linear connections between different concepts. There is no fundamental reason that intelligence and true understanding of concepts couldnt emerge from that.
This is the thing ive been drilling into my kids’ head for years. Anything you do, say, send, or search online is NOT PRIVATE. No matter how safe you think something is, it can ultimately be found by someone else.
