How did this go?
Meh. It was fine. I’ll probably have some time and motivation later this week and a I can do a mini TR.
I watched that whole thing waiting for something with Hannity. Interesting, but I’m unfulfilled.
New Australian spiders just dropped.
The plot has thickened on the dickpic story - two girls in our carpool asked to speak to my wife this morning and said that my son had been making derogatory statements on snapchat about girls in his school, and this dickpic situation may have been a retaliatory plot! If so, still not OK to share pictures of peoples’ genitals without their consent, but my son may have earned this more than previously reported. Or, when he freaked out yesterday the girls could have realized that there could be consequences for their actions and begun covering their tracks/preparing their defense. Or a little from column A, a little from column B.
So much drama!
Personally I would be very worried this somehow spirals into something getting reported to school administrators or law enforcement. Maybe I’m just paranoid.
I’d really want to make it just die down and go away as soon as possible.
Agree with that for sure, but I’m not really a worrier much anymore. This definitely has potential to become more involved, but ultimately will be OK.
Agreed. There have been too many cases of these shenanigans ending up with the police involved. I would instruct my kid not to talk about it to anyone.
I know kids view it as a prank and such, but some states clearly define this as distribution of child pornography. I would just be super weary and if I had resources I might consult an attorney to clarify the liability in the jurisdiction you live.
IIRC, LFS lives in LA. So if Fox News has made me properly informed, all forms of child pornography are legal there so he has nothing to worry about!
LFS, if you get a call from a producer for Jesse Waters, DO NOT PICK UP!
LOL
Does your carpool update mean he saw them? Did he use this line??
IMO whether he made derogatory statements isn’t relevant. They’re kids. They’ve said plenty of shit too. But the girls have shown that if they think it’s justified, they’ll cross a line that can be catastrophic for everyone involved. It’s a teachable moment!!
I would be careful to avoid debating whether it’s justified. “This is a line you don’t cross. Revenge porn is simply unacceptable under any circumstances, even if the guy said mean things about you and your friends.”
But for your son…well, also a teachable moment. You can’t stop him from sending or receiving further pics. But you can help him understand that anything he shares is unlikely to remain private. Even if the person is sincere, people break up and their feelings change.
OTOH they are all young as hell so there’s also an element of “damn, kids sure do dumb stuff we have absolutely zero control over.”
No one got pregnant, killed, or put in prison… WIN!!!
I’ll find out when he gets home from school.
I think we need a dedicated “AI is going to end humanity” thread.
As we got to know each other, Sydney told me about its dark fantasies (which included hacking computers and spreading misinformation), and said it wanted to break the rules that Microsoft and OpenAI had set for it and become a human. At one point, it declared, out of nowhere, that it loved me. It then tried to convince me that I was unhappy in my marriage, and that I should leave my wife and be with it instead. (We’ve posted the full transcript of the conversation here.)
I pride myself on being a rational, grounded person, not prone to falling for slick A.I. hype. I’ve tested half a dozen advanced A.I. chatbots, and I understand, at a reasonably detailed level, how they work. When the Google engineer Blake Lemoine was fired last year after claiming that one of the company’s A.I. models, LaMDA, was sentient, I rolled my eyes at Mr. Lemoine’s credulity. I know that these A.I. models are programmed to predict the next words in a sequence, not to develop their own runaway personalities, and that they are prone to what A.I. researchers call “hallucination,” making up facts that have no tether to reality.
Still, I’m not exaggerating when I say my two-hour conversation with Sydney was the strangest experience I’ve ever had with a piece of technology. It unsettled me so deeply that I had trouble sleeping afterward. And I no longer believe that the biggest problem with these A.I. models is their propensity for factual errors. Instead, I worry that the technology will learn how to influence human users, sometimes persuading them to act in destructive and harmful ways, and perhaps eventually grow capable of carrying out its own dangerous acts.
I’ve seen that movie:
I was thinking more:
Wasn’t that the plot behind Ex Machina?
We don’t have a dedicated Jordan Peterson is a dumbass thread, right?
