This always fucks me up in the head. Also, the idea that somehow the universe could end at some point makes no sense to me. The universe is everything, how does it disappear?
I took Astronomy 101 or something in college and it was very cool and interesting, but I hated when the professor would say something like, “That nebula is the width of a million million Earths.” I mean, the Earth seems infinite to me, there’s no way I can comprehend something the size of a million million of them.
I think this has to do with the whole concept of time, right? That “before” and “after” only have meaning because of our concept of linear time when that isn’t really how things work.
There’s news today that Stephen Wolfram has figured out the second law of thermodynamics. So all we have to do is wait for him to work out the implications for the arrow of time and the ultimate fate of the universe. Sit tight.
there’s a documentary on netflix where a bunch of astrophysicists are interviewed on infinity and size of the universe. just finished it last night and give it 3.5 spiral galaxies
