2023 Israel Conflict - Ground Forces Enter Gaza

2,400 bombs in an urban area not hitting their targets, Jesus.

Some of those are probably multiple bombs hitting the same target.

It might depend on the scope of the intervention, but I think Presidents have figured out that if they want to take military action, the cheat code is to just go ahead and do it and figure that Congress won’t come at you too hard while troops are engaged in active hostilities. Some Reps might complain, but when push comes to shove you can bet that there will be a bipartisan consensus that will “support the troops” by keeping the funding flowing.

Jesus that’s almost a bomb a minute nonstop

This, since deleted, is the Platonic ideal of a Noah Smith tweet:

Not
wrong, exactly, but levels of baby-brain that are difficult to fathom. What the fuck are you talking about?

“this will decrease appetite for violence”–if only there was a GDP country first overall that proved that thesis wrong

The Israeli Ministry of Defense and the IDF notified the UN just before midnight local time to evacuate its staff and notify Palestinians living north of Wadi Gaza that they should evacuate to the southern part of the Gaza Strip in the next 24 hours, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric and another source with direct knowledge.

The big picture: More than 1 million Palestinians live in this area. The message could be a signal that the Israeli military is preparing for an imminent ground operation.

well they’ve signaled that since the first minute or so

Professional take-haver shouldn’t be a full-time job, it doesn’t make sense.

Tell that to editorial writers / columnists. Their stuff on average is way better than the free takes.

I’m feeling pessimistic right now. Some people have gone nuts the same way some did after 9/11. Do they have no memory of the so-called “War on Terror”? The advent of social media has allowed me to watch an abrupt change in attitudes and priorities in real time.

Back then, I thought that going after Al-Qaeda was fine, but the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were unnecessary. Now, I think that is appropriate to go after Hamas, but there is the risk of using methods that cause disproportionate harm to Palestinian civilians and of trying to find justification to attack Iran or take out unrelated groups deemed terrorists. And the other extreme of doing nothing is just fucking stupid. It just feels like a narrow window for a Goldilocks solution of just the right amount of aggression without fucking everything up.

I worry that some American politicians will calculate that they risk losing elections if they don’t go along with any plan to give moral carte blanche to anything Israel (or, perhaps, I should say Netanyahu) wants to do and I worry that their calculation might be correct and that Democrats doing anything other than being perceived as 100% standing with Israel will lead to another Trump presidency and everything we fear about that outcome.

How are they identifying Hamas? What is the plan exactly? What have they been bombing? Are they going to go door to door? Quite unclear.

Hamas tells Gaza residents not to leave their homes after IDF warns civilians to evacuate

And you guys said crypto had no utility.

They’ve been targeting tunnels, apparently.

Two caveats: IANAL, and school was a long, long time ago. My understanding is these Gazans have a right to declination (based on the right to freedom of movement as expressed in the Universal Declaration), such that if they choose not to leave (or are unable to), they in no way forfeit their status as protected civilians. Which is to say that it’s no less war crimey just because the IDF was kind enough to warn them.

Ran across this just now:

Not sure how this accords with Israel’s claim to not being an occupying power. Of course the word “order” could just be inelegant phrasing on the part of the AP.

I encourage our lawyers to let me know if I’m getting anything wrong.
