Every time I see this gif I associate it with Phil Ivey but I can’t remember why.
I mean, there was a time when that gif was the reaction of most of 2p2 whenever Phil Ivey won/lost/ate/breathed/took a dump/sneezed/spoke/stayed silent/walked/ran/etc
So why would one be in an odd year and one in an even year? ok, went to wikipedia
- December 3, 1855 – February 2, 1856: The election for Speaker of the House was the longest and most contentious Speaker election in its history, due to sectional conflict over slavery and a rising anti-immigrant mood in the nation that contributed to a poisoned and deteriorating political climate. Further, no party had received a majority of the seats, while 21 members vied for the post of Speaker. The election took 133 ballots and two months, with Nathaniel P. Banks winning over William Aiken Jr. by 103 to 100 votes. Technically, 113 votes were required to secure a majority in the election for Speaker, but a change was made to the rules so that a winner to be declared with a plurality if, after three consecutive rounds of voting, no majority was achieved.[1] Banks, a member of both the nativist Know-Nothing (American) Party and the Free Soil Party, served one term as Speaker before Democrats regained control of the chamber in the 35th Congress.[2][3]
Assumed but an easy punchline, nevertheless.
Lololol zero chance of this

It really is crazy what happened to this guy
Isn’t it more likely that all Dems and 10 Rs or whatever they need just say nah there?
Lordy I’m hoping that ole Kev will cut a deal with the Ds that f over the insurrection caucus (or whatever they are called). Keep them out of committed, go back to the old rules.
They can’t legislate anyhow. All they are going to do is beat off for two years, regardless.
Compromise: Dems vote for Kevin McCarthy, but he has to move out of the Speaker’s suite. Nancy moves back in. Everyone’s jimmies get rustled.
The speaker moving a bill without the majority of his/her caucus behind the bill would be pretty unusual. They can do it without this small faction of idiots, but are probably going to need majority Republican support to raise the debt ceiling.
McCarthy is truly a complete moron. Like this guy might legit have a sub-90 IQ. He has absolutely zero strategic instincts. This was all totally predictable. LOL caving to the nut jobs without even getting their commitments to support him.
Is it worth watching coverage of this? Do they really just read off hundreds of names and they shout out someone? Does anyone get to rant at all?
So if anyone is elected speaker, is there actually any non-impeachment formal way to vote them out again? Like a 2/3 majority or something? That would make things more interesting/ open up possibilites for some weird 1 year/1 year split
Not really watchable. I watched yesterday - they open the floor for nominations, the person making the nomination gets to make a brief speech. Mostly pro who they are nominating, but they did always make time for a few brief, veiled, shots at the other nominees.
It was one of the big negotiating points for the Gaetz crew - I think before it took 50% of the caucus to open up a vote to replace the speaker. The Gaetz/Boebert crew wanted (and McCarthy caved) to lower that to 5 members, I think.
It’s a motion to vacate the chair.
McCarthy already gave them everything they claimed to want, this is why you don’t negotiate with terrorists but apparently that is hard to embrace when you are also a terrorist.
He’s agreed to lower it to 5, they want him to lower it to 1 or 2.
