More or less decides what bills come to the floor for a vote and when. There are some procedural tricks to get around it, but, in most cases, if the Speaker doesn’t want a vote there is no vote. And if the Speaker wants a vote, there is a vote. This can be very handy when you want to protect certain members of your party by not making them vote on a tough bill (or punish the other party by bringing up a wedge issue)
They get to pick members of conference committees and select committees. This can provide helpful leverage over people who want to serve on those committees and can also impact the outcome of the committees (ex - do you put people on who actually want to research the topic, or do you load it up with bombthrowers who will derail it as much as possible?)
It’s all kinda inside baseball, but it’s the sort of stuff where someone who knows what they’re doing can find leverage and spots for horse trading.
Even if that somehow happened, current rules would pretty much allow any GOP member to call a vote to oust him as soon as they were back at full strength, right? Would be funny but it’s not like it would really matter.
Yeah, most likely. Idk if their plan is to get Gym elected following the same logic of enough defectors being absent that they can get him across the finish line but he would presumably suffer the same fate.
Lock them in for the weekend. No food. No cell phones. No bathroom breaks. No media. If anyone passes out, the person next to them is allowed to vote for them.
More than one, apparently. McCarthy supposedly made a secret list. Considering that we went from McCarthy to McHenry, if McHenry resigned, Ronald McDonald might be next man up.
