Looks like the field is over 8,000 now. Still going to be tough to break the record with Day 2 registrations unless there’s a last-second dump of mail-in ballots.

Great run!

Can’t complain about it! Great way to end my summer of fun. Paid for all my trips with a little extra pocket cash, was also able to spend some time with my buddy who is moving to Israel for 3 years. 10/10 would recommend.

I enjoyed the Venetian 1 day events more than the WSOP ones. They were really well ran and soft.

Trying to create an over-the-top visual moment that goes viral on the internet? I did see it shared on non-poker Twitter.

It’s not like it’s an either/or between what they did and what you think they should do.

True, I guess if it’s getting shared on non-poker Twitter it’s ok. Not sure other celebs would want to be subjected to that to emcee the WSOP, though. But maybe they’re cutting a ridiculous check for it. It was pretty clear from the interviews last year that Vince Vaughn is not, in fact, a poker player. So it’s not like he would have thought this was super cool when he got offered it.

Just look at the WSOP million dollar bounty (and other mystery bounty tournaments). Poker is more interesting when they create a circus atmosphere than when they try to portray poker as a cerebral, chess-like activity.

It wasn’t lame because of that. It was lame because Hellmuth already did it.

VV has enough resources that even if he can’t crank out a single original idea he should be able to pay someone else to.

I’m guessing it was the WSOP’s idea to do that, maybe even marketing from above that leaning heavily into the Caesars branding.

Guess I’m just feeling apoplectic about it.

Yeah I’m not saying they should portray it as a cerebral activity, I’m just saying making Vince Vaughn dress up like a clown may not be maximizing that situation for either party.

For sure. I mean, Vince Vaughn isn’t necessarily an A-lister now, but he was at one point - he got $15-20M for several of his movies. I doubt he wanted to dress up like that, if it were just up to him.

The other thing is as far as I know there was no advance promotion of the fact that he’d be there. Could have brought some non poker players in to see him, which would expose them to the WSOP and promote the brand.

I liked the entrance, but I’d personally only do it if I was confident I was going deep.

I’d do it for the money Hellmuth probably makes on endorsements, partially as a result of doing it.

FWIW Vince Vaughn has the has-been stink on him big time. The video of him hanging with Trump did major damage to a career that was already lagging.

all grown up joke that didn’t work

The WSOP is trying desperately to make it 2007 again. Which is weird in a world where I can’t watch TV without being flooded with ads from sportsbooks I haven’t heard of.

Just think of that entrance as a live ad for Caesars Sports book.
