I don’t agree with this, mostly because the 1/6 hearings are conducted by Republicans for the purpose of shaming other Republicans into moving on from Trump. Liz Cheney is the only effective messenger I’ve seen on the committee!
But more generally, they can do both. You can advocate for your policy goals by framing them in the context of a truly insane opposition party. As noted, the real problem is they have lost all credibility.
I mean it’s all relative. I am “optimistic” that Dems might get a good midterm result but it will be a) in spite of the useless fossil leadership in the party and b) only because Rs are finally moving on things that well and truly pissed off the Dem voting base. For fucks sake Biden and the rest of Team Loser have been selling the idea of working with Republicans to do Bipartisanship. The anger at Republicans and any resultant surge in votes for Dems is an indictment of Bidenism, not a resounding vote for more collaboration with Rs and bipartisan bills.
Bro, they’re only cleaning the house of Never-Trumpers. Liz Cheney’s career is dead now. All they’re doing with 1/6 is teasing the Muller She Wrote crowd with stuff that’s never going to happen. It’s a big dumb spectacle that’s taking up time they could spend on actual shit people care about.
For Republicans, the lesson is clear: you will be put down if you don’t defend Trumpism.
Jan 6 committee stuff is a winner for Dems. The general public now correctly perceives GOP as an extremist party, which Jan 6 has moved the needle on, and mainstream media actually is on Dems’ side. I don’t have any data, but I’m sure “we got him” is a huge fundraiser too. “MuellerSheWrote” types are the Dem donor base.
dem and/or progressive policies pass when they are unburdened by the (d) or (r) next to the selections…
it’s why oklahoma has lax drug laws(with every instance of possession being a misdemeanor), easily got medical marijuana, and is likely to get recreational marijuana in the near future. and why florida voted for the increased minimum wage and re-enfranchising people that went to prison.
if the dems were smart and had the republicans long game in mind, you would see more state questions trying to push policy. that is ofcourse if the majority of dem politicans actually want any of those policies rather than just maintaining their job and the status quo.
I think this is true for the Jan 6 committee stuff. The mainstream media LOVES stories that their lazy asses can run without doing any actual journalism. “Hey look at this Republican dipshit testifying about this other Republican dipshit” is right up their alley. One of the defining characteristics of mainstream media now is just how lazy they are and how much their “journalism” involves uncritically broadcasting things that they are fed by others. The only reason they’re on the Dems side here is that they are lazily broadcasting the obvious Republican terribleness that is at the heart of Jan 6. They aren’t actually doing any work.
Everyone already knows Republicans are terrible, they don’t need to be reminded of that, they need to hear about what Dems are going to do. Joe should be out there pounding the table telling everyone Dems are out there defending abortion and scoring wins in Kansas. Can you imagine how hard Trump would be boasting about this kind of thing?
In 2022 your median citizen has the attention span of a gnat and needs to be constantly reminded of oh look a new kind of fast food burger. What was I saying?
