I don’t think it’s 100/0 either way. But I think a lot of it is just vibe, and communication style. Like imagine how the average person would react to Oz in real life when he walked out of a room. Probably an eye roll and like “Do you believe this fucking guy?”
That’s basically what all the Fetterman trolling is. It’s the natural reaction.
Fetterman is kind of like the non-stupid, non-bigoted non-vulgar, progressive version of the same style of authenticity as Trump. You don’t feel like you’re listening to a focus group tested speech that has been triangulated to offer the median policy position. He tells it like it is.
Like my Dad is center-right, but he likes Bernie. He agrees everyone should have healthcare, when he hears it explained by someone he thinks is authentic and not bullshitting him.
In other words, his one truly authentic moment and a raw emotional reaction to a horrible tragedy that made him look very human?
All of those things are true, but he’s super entertaining and funny to a lot of people too. I still don’t understand how he’s so insanely good on Twitter, but he undeniably was.
I mean, it’s tricky because being an asshole is actually more important than policy for the median Republican voter than Trump’s stance on wages or healthcare. As Dvaut says, it’s a post-policy world of politics and calling Hillary an ugly hag who should be locked up riles up the base more than whatever Trump’s policy views are (and Trump has been all over the place on nearly every policy issue). Being an asshole is the point.

Man Hillary was just so terrible at every level, she was like a hanging fastball right over the plate for Trump, he could not have asked for a better target for his brand of insult comedy.

I’ll be honest: I think all of this is stupid and morally frivolous, and I wish John Fetterman would not do it. Even if it turns out that in 2022, you can “shitpost your way to the Senate,” you shouldn’t. A progressive senate candidate should force a discussion on things that matter, not get the media talking about how sick his Twitter burns are. I also think Fetterman is taking a big risk here by assuming that Pennsylvania voters can actually be influenced by memes. … Democrats who want voters to come out for them really ought to emphasize their agenda rather than just mocking their opponent. What will you do in the Senate? I want to see progressive candidates get behind the Economic Bill of Rights. I want them to show that they’re not going to be do-nothing Democrats who think their job is finished when they beat the Republican.
Nathan J Robinson is a fucking tool, and dumb. On the topic at hand, Fetterman tweets about policy all the time. That stupid hat wearing MFer needs a real job.
This is all kind of true but really he was just being an asshole and a bully, and we found it funny because we don’t like Rubio or Jeb! or Hillary. It’s an awfully low form of humor, it probably speaks more to how pathetically phony and lame the humor of more conventional politicians is.
My guess is that Democratic improvement on the generic ballot drives their numbers to predict that Dems are more likely to hold seats and win Pennsylvania.
Nate posted that this largely ignores the July polls (treating them more like outliers until there is more support). Their old classic mode has the D up to 62% to hold the senate.
