For what? Fucking winning?

I just assumed you’d have died of a heart attack by now if you’re a regular reader of eDem Twitter.

I am also curious. @Riverman , you have any links to examples?

Lots of eDem twitter types with “let’s wait and see if he actually wins” takes.

I think one lesson of Fetterman is that yelling “those guys are bad” is way less effective than just being a normal human. Every eDem empty suit like Conor Lamb is instantly ignored by gettable voters because the insincerity oozes from his stupid face.

The Dems are right that the key to winning more elections is capturing swing voters. Their mistake is thinking you get them with policy. You get them with being normal and, crucially, funny. Name another democrat who is these two things!

I’m not at all convinced that his popularity is because of his PA yambag stylings and not because of his actually popular socialist policies.

Lots of truth in this. Can the populist candidate lead vs follow?

I guess I’m not sure if it’s a happy coincidence that the high-visibility socialist politicos like Bernie, The Squad, and Fetterman are all pretty adept at social media, or if the sorts of people who have lefty populist positions are inherently more appealing to regular schmucks.

The problem is you have to be some kind of sicko to be interested in politics. And to even consider running for something you have to be a real freak of some description.

I think it’s because he’s genuine and relatable. If you have that, you can probably sell that any policies are best.

OK, l but is he genuine and relatable because of spicy tweets or because he supports M4A, raising the minimum wage and other working-class concerns? It’s not an easy question imo.

I think in this community it’s going to be because he supports those things as they’re a litmus test here, but for the USA or PA at large it’s more that he’s just genuine and relatable. There’s plenty of progressives out there with little following generally, but who are well liked on the left.

Like hundreds of actually progressive Dems have tried and failed. He’s landing because he’s relatable and funny.

Consider Beto. He’s pretty darn progressive. Gets no traction because he’s not really relatable or funny.

This is Trumps greatest skill. He has managed to fake genuine and relatable even though he is truly neither. And it’s not really completely fake. He is a bigot, so that part is both genuine and relatable to MAGA-land, and that does most of the heavy lifting.

He’s also a petty, insecure man who lives to settle scores - that is very relatable for much of the R base.

People have long underestimated humor as part of Trumps appeal. Not so much post-insurrection, but in 2016 for sure. This was funny!

I’d say Beto is pretty solidly a centrist and fairly successful, but a big part of his appeal was when he went after the NRA.
