I made this point like 20 posts ago.
Clovis gonna Clovis.
I really think that what he’s trying to say is that he thinks Elvis sucks. If he’d kept it simple like that, it would have been irrefutable, since that is just a matter of opinion. But I guess he was shooting for something more objective, so here we are.
Pandemic yt was a godsend to me and I watched that video… well, more than once.
I already conceded the objective point. But yes Elvis does suck. One of the few famous artists I can’t think of one good song.
The Grateful Dead played to an estimated 25 million people over their career—more than any other band in history.
25 million doesn’t sound all that much. The Rolling Stones have been on tour forever. They don’t have more than 25 million?
Just out of curiosity, what makes a good song?
Yeah, like, 500 sold out 50,000-person stadiums = 25 million. Seems like the Stones easily could have done more than 500 stadium shows by now.
IDK. The Dead toured a lot more and played to a few 100,000+ crowds during their days so wouldn’t think they are more. Maybe by now, I think this was also in the 90s when Jerry had just died.
This says 2000+ concerts played:
This blog claims 42 million tickets sold:
Edit: No idea where they got this numbers from
How many of those are after Jerry died though. I’m pretty sure that fact came from like 1998 when the Dead were in Guinness for most shows played. Sorry!
Takes more than a forum chat to explain that one.
Ok, that makes a difference obviously.
Let’s not forget Elvis started wiggling those hips in the mid-1950s - 10+ years before the Beatles got the girls screaming.
I was at a job once and recall the boss complaining because his kid asked him if he knew that Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings. It was in 1984.
I could almost go Clovis on the Rolling Stones. Don’t think they suck or anything but never got into them really at all. Gimme Shelter is a great song.
I think that is the key. He got so famous out of sheer luck of timing. If he came out 15 years later he is a forgotten footnote in music. His actual talent was minor. He was just right place right time. A cute white guy who was able to leverage black music to fame.
I agree. They are way over rated too. The Beatles and Beach Boys were miles better and more important.
Stones do have a few great songs though.
imo Elvis is remembered not so much for his music as the fact that guys like him and Jerry Lee Lewis basically invented what it is to be a rock star.
His music isn’t my thing but he had a great singing voice at a time when ballads were popular.
