2022 LC Thread—New Year, New Thread

other than the fact that the entire southeast half of the state is literally a desert, that has to do all with the amount of sunlight and the fact we are able to get snow melt off our mountains when we get lucky. it’s in a very concentrated area in the central valley. the last 20 years at least in LA region there’s been a crazy amount of years w under 5 inches rain total. and getting worse.

i mean like, it is, if you want to semantics it fine, i will restate “it is a region with typically very little rainfall that is prone to severe drought.”

I guess there is no difference and I didn’t think I was making one. I do not believe you can lower housing costs in california without massively depreciating the market. no matter how many you build you’re not going to get around the fact that you’re never gonna see a home value below 500k (barring a huge crash) and the cost for those is well above the average wage in the same region.

they just posted some crazy article in the LA times I think, I’ll try to find it if I can remember, about how bad the imbalance is between housing cost and avg wage and how it was crushing millennials like my friends.

The demand in my mind is unlimited. these 1.2 mill condos next to me are in the literal SHITTIEST area. I cannot emphasize this enough. that guy can look outside his window and is directly next to a chain of low-rent motels that function as crime dens. they can look outside and spit on two bums fucking in the parking lot most nights. they were sold out instantly like even a year before they were finished.

if you ask why I live in a shitty area, I kinda like living in places with a little city edge to them and I really liked this particular unit.

Central Valley is huge as shit dude. There’s more to california than LA

dude like you’re approaching this from such a place of ignorance I’m really struggling to moderate my tone in responding to this. Do you think I’ve never driven up and down this state a million times? Like I’ve never left my county or something? Holy cow I need to log out

Im sure I’m more familiar with the Central Valley than you.

The central valley is bigger than quite a few states and the entire thing is basically ag or cities developed around ag industry, ports or trains. You count it by watershed and it’s a third of the state. The valley proper is basically 1.5 marylands. Agriculture is throughout, and it produces massive amounts of food.

The water in California is in short supply because of that agriculture. The people are not the issue. The issue are the ag industry producing crops that require a ton of water like almonds because it makes a lot of money.

Well, if you ask them, the real issue is that Newsom steals their water to save the spotted guppie.

Well, that’s one way to get prints on a murder weapon.

Ha yeah, that’s what we were thinking afterwards, nothing else really made sense

Oh yeah some parts the east side of the valley might as well be sundown towns

The migrants were walking in a group of four people along a roadway near Sierra Blanca when they stopped at a water tank, according to the documents. While they were there, the pickup truck approached and then stopped. The migrants told investigators that they tried to hide behind the tank.

The two men who emerged from the truck approached them and fired at least two times, the migrants said. One shot hit one of the migrants in the head, killing him; another shot hit a female migrant in the stomach. She was taken to a hospital where she was recovering, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is investigating the case.

Both men were charged with manslaughter, according to legal documents in the case.

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I’m assuming that it’s a temporary charge

I though there was like a 5 mile “no poors” exclusion zone around UCI? can you link a map with the location of said ghetto?

Maybe it was here near OCC? Or there are a couple of dodgy area in Costa Mesa. An old 2br house will still cost $500-600k.

Ooh my bad it was UCLA, not Irvine, it was a looong time ago

Bourdain said he never drinks at home, just on the road. I wonder if the book says something different (haven’t read the article yet).

I think he was just extremely prone to bouts of severe depression. The Argentina episode where he talks to a shrink pretty much lays it out. Also some stuff slips out in other episodes.

Edit: reading the article now. I knew it came out that Asia Argento was canoodling with some other dude a few days before Bourdain’s death. I wondered if that triggered the suicide. Looks like it probably did.

I don’t think I need to read this book. I’ll remember the on-screen Tony for all the inspiration he gave me.

KC Royals fan too!

@CaffeineNeeded I don’t understand why you felt the need to belittle someone on a topic you clearly don’t understand.

The irrigation system of the Central Valley is on such an impressive scale moving so much water from so far away, that it’s a shame you aren’t familiar with it at all.

The bottom row is precipitation.

I don’t think anyone’s debating the fact that the area is dry, it’s that it uses an enormous amount of water. For a good purpose, to be sure, but that’s where the vast majority of water imported into California goes.

@CaffeineNeeded tried to make a point that the Central Valley’s high agricultural output meant that it can’t be a dry place.

If anybody wants to reread the exchange and argue otherwise, have fun! There’s not really any other point he could be making that would fit “look goofy and jmakin, you’re wrong and I’m right.”

How are you certain of that? Like seriously how?

Note that not once in the rest of my post you ignored did I say it was small or not huge. Of course I am aware the land mass is large. But as a total % of the state’s area, it is concentrated to a specific area - which is literally what I fucking said.

The state has 38316 sq mi of farmland. The state is more than quadruple the size of that and much of it is desert. Are we gonna next play a semantics game about the precise meaning of concentrated so you can score an internet point? That is not my intention when I post here, it is to understand the world better and maybe improve my own attitudes about things, and relay my experience in a way that can maybe generate discussion in a way that improves that understanding.

I see this is a poor place for that, I have no interest in this petty display.

I’ve only read one of his books but he was impulsive, self-destructive and reckless.
