The architect of record of this 51 story hotel being built on the West Side aparently has no memory of ever seeing the plans for it. Ooopsie Daisy!

I am sure this is only a one-time occurrence of a real-estate developer doing something shady in order to save money and get their projects done, so really nothing to worry about.
Definitely a shady developer, but explicitly agreeing to this arrangement makes the architect pretty scumbag-adjacent imo.
Good news is that this is in the Hudson Yards/Javits Center area so if it suddenly collapses, we can just chalk it up to slum clearence.
Confirmed that 5 Guys fries portions are much smaller.
Small sample size, but I guess Medium is the GTO play.
Architects are rarely involved in anything structural, and certainly wouldn’t be on a high rise. Honestly, anything that matters at all on a large commercial project is going to be handled by an engineering firm that specializes in that particular thing. The architect never seeing the plans just slightly increases the chances of it being an ugly building.

Kinda. Architects usually hold the prime contract and are the responsible party for the project. Architects should do an overall QA/QC on the full plans to look for any inconsistencies or issues (duct work going through posts, etc.). The engineers usually work as a subconsultant to the architect.
It’s very abnormal for an architect to put their stamp on a set of plans without looking at them first.
Oh I agree it’s extremely unheard of. But I doubt it mattered much.
