Some people argue that land acknowledgments are “gestures of respect.” I’m not sure one can show respect while also being indifferent to a people’s existence. The statements are a counterfeit version of respect. Teen Vogue put it well, if unintentionally: “Land acknowledgment is an easy way to show honor and respect to the indigenous people.” A great deal of nonsense about identity politics could be avoided by studying this line, and realizing that respect shown the “easy way” is just as cheap as it sounds.

I think at large events they can be aspirational, like “we as a community want to do a better job of acknowledging the existence of indigenous peoples”. When it’s on the level of community or government there are answers to the question “what is it that you aspire to do?” because the government and community are actually in a position to try to bring about sociocultural changes. When they’re done in, like, bank boardroom meetings the answer to “what is it that you aspire to do?” is “absolutely fucking nothing” and then we’re falling back to the “respect” justifications and the quote above explains well how I feel about that.

I think the current rallying cry is that America is obviously objectively great in every way, except for the ways that libruls are RUINING it with SOCIALISM. This way you can have your nationalist conservative cake and eat it too - America and white people are inherently superior, but there is still no shortage of things to be outraged about.

It’s a classic move. Usually it’s the Jews who are destroying the otherwise perfect country from within, it’s a bold move to make the hated other like half of your population rather than the few % that Jewish people usually represent.
I think what makes the magic work is that the country is actually more like 33/33/33 split between propaganda fed ethno-fascist Republican voters, Dem voters (spanning both the progressive wing and the “can’t we just leave things basically the same, I’m doing fine” wings of the Dems), and totally disengaged non-voting people.
