I’ve got one of these. Looks like they’re calling that a “grill”.
Any general-purpose BBQ here will have a hotplate, because at any BBQ/sausage sizzle fried chopped onions are ubiquitous and often required in quantities where a frying pan won’t cut it:
You can see this one doesn’t even have a grill at all. The only way a BBQ will be all-grill is if it’s a specialist one for doing low and slow charcoal grilling or something like that.
For that use case, it obviously is the best appliance.
You don’t really see those things outdoors at residences. Sometimes some sort of commercial operation will have one outdoors. And of course, plenty of restaurants have them indoors.
Edit: To circle back to the original issue, no one here calls those things “hot plates”. Normally those are small and electric. They are flat and generally a vessel is used (i.e., food is not put directly on them). Something like this:
Yeah, I call the small scale one above a griddle, and this big commercial one is a flattop. It’s sometimes called a grill in America, though. Like, if you go to a place called a “bar and grill” here, the “grill” is 99.9% likely to be a flattop. I’m not going to bat for that terminology, but I also can’t fight widespread usage.
What was George Foreman selling?
Sure you do, you just need to know how to cook on a grill. Sear directly over the flame, then move it off to the side to finish cooking. If you’re not going to get the benefits of smoke and flame, why bother with any of this? I get the commercial applications, but for backyard use it’s just an unnecessarily complicated outdoor frying pan.
You see, humans evolved in an environment where selective fitness was enhanced when, in response to the presence of a hanger…
“Off to the side” isn’t necessarily a thing for the smaller grills, having even heating all over the grill is a selling point. The big entirely hotplate bbq pictured above is designed for use for large events. More typical is to have part grill space and part hotplate, then you chargrill the things that need to be chargrilled (steaks, marinated meats, corn etc) and you cook the other stuff on the plate.
So yeah it amounts to a large frying pan, but the point is cooking everything together, in large quantity, all outside where you can socialize and not get your kitchen smoky and greasy. Some of the larger ones have gas burners too, so you can heat things in saucepans or whatever. in fact the line between bbq and outdoor kitchen can be blurry.
Labor are going to be able to form majority government, with the Greens probably holding the balance of power in the Senate. Good outcome. I just hope the next few years aren’t too savage economically. Labor tends to be elected when times are uncertain and then we get those bullshit comparisons where it’s like “they always preside over deficits” etc.
I tried it. My head did nothing the first time. But on a few subsequent tries it wanted to turn. I think the key is if the upper bend of the hanger hits your temple, your head wants to turn. Meaning this part:
Just try pushing your temple with your finger. Your head wants to turn.
Like just about everyone here I have little interest in the celebrity drama element of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial but there’s clearly something significant about the hatred projected towards Heard.
Reasonable people are shut out of the conversation by their aversion to the story in general magnified by an understandable reluctance to take a side given incomplete information. The result is a narrative that is clearly being dominated by people with ugly motives.
One of two things is going on there:
-
Amber Heard is the kind of person with a personality disorder who abuses their romantic partners pretty much every way possible. When the relationship was ending she decided to get even by weaponizing the #Metoo movement against the victim escaping her. Please note that this version of events doesn’t, in my opinion, give Johnny Depp a pass. He married Amber Heard and was extremely good friends with Marilyn Manson (they have matching tattoos lolol). There’s obviously something pretty seriously wrong with anyone who has a ton of people like this in their orbit when they could have literally any cast of characters for their orbit imaginable. There’s no version of events I’m aware of where Depp sees being horrible to other human beings as a deal breaker. This was a leopards eating faces situation for sure.

There is a huge misinformation campaign going on that has totally penetrated my social media feed to villainize Amber Heard and make her seem like the biggest piece of shit on planet earth. Not impossible or anything, but it seems pretty unlikely. I say this because there seems to be an unlimited pool of footage making Amber look terrible during this trial, and because there haven’t been any other accusations against Depp… but there have been several against Heard. The reality is that if Depp were a woman and Heard were a man I don’t think Heard would have a single public supporter, and that would probably be 100% correct.
I’m ~90% sure that it’s #1. I’ve maintained for a long long time that one of the hardest things for any movement to maintain is quality control because of awful people attempting to bandwagon and use the movement for cover. This seems like a pretty cut and dried case of that, and I have quite a bit of sympathy for people who started this process 100% on Amber’s side as a default position… even though I think they need to be significantly more defensive in how they setup their default position. ‘Believe all women’ is a very dangerous default setting IMO. Women are humans and humans in general are the fucking worst. You tell any large group of humans that if they come forward they’ll automatically be believed and at least a few of them are going to demonstrate dark triad behavior for you… and those people need to be rooted out to keep the larger movement credible.
I think the optimal line for #Metoo supporters (which I consider myself to be generally) is to support what appear to be the facts in this case and to use it to bring attention to the fact that it’s not just women who experience abuse in relationships. Obviously the caveat here is that often when women get into relationships like the one Depp escaped they often end up dead.
And of course this trial is a fucking bonanza for reactionary forces that want to discredit #Metoo… so of course some of the people pushing Depp’s side of things have anything but good motives. Unfortunately sometimes shitty people get given a legit talking point, and preventing that from happening is what the quality control I keep alluding to is about.
Some would say Depp is a freak and a very weird dude.
There is a ton of anti-Heard incel propaganda that’s being aggressively pushed all over social media. It’s like that Mearsheimer video that just so happened to pop up in everyones YouTube recommendations at the same time.
Genuinely no idea why anyone on earth cares about the Depp Heard thing.
It’s a vicious cycle in terms of how the anti-Heard stuff is being pushed. It likely started with some combination of Depp fans/shills paid by Depp. It grows because two groups see an opportunity - (1) RWNJ that hate women (there are articles showing that the Daily Caller is paying to have anti-Heard articles pushed on social media) and (2) influencers that just want impressions. Influencers see that anti-Heard stuff gets tons of likes/views while neutral stuff doesn’t, so they start pushing the anti-Heard narrative. This then seeps out so that people like boredsocial when looking at his social media feed decide that there is a 90% chance Heard is a lying bitch.
edit: to add, there is almost no way Heard is 100% lying. She has photos from the entirety of their marriage showing bruises. There are contemporaneous documents supporting her claims. So if she’s lying, this was something that she planned while they were married. Now, I’m not saying she isn’t exaggerating to some extent, but anyone that that says this was somehow concocted by her to get revenge after the marriage ended has no clue what they are talking about.
I’m just confused why he wrote a 5 paragraph essay saying he’s sure AH is a bitch because of his followers on social media - while surely knowing that Twitter is dominated by men and celebrity fanboys - when he could have spent that time actually checking the facts of the case himself.
