119th Congress thread.

Senate starting composition:

53 R
47 D/I

New Senate Majority Leader: John Thune of South Dakota.

House starting composition

219 R
215 D

Matt Gaetz has resigned and will not be seated despite winning re-election. Elise Stefanik and Bill Waltz are expected to resign to take positions in the new administration, but will probably be needed to show up to elect a speaker. They represent safe districts, but vacancies will make it that much harder for the majority to pass much of anything.

Key dates:
January 3: House Speaker election starting at noon eastern. Votes expected until someone gets a majority of the votes cast. As recently as this week, noted shitheel Chip Roy of Texas said that Mike Johnson doesn’t yet have enough votes.

January 6: Confirmation of the electoral college vote, provided the house has elected a speaker.

January 20: inauguration day

March 14: the continuing resolution passed in December 2024 runs out of money. Potential (likely?) date of government shutdown, given slim majority and Republican track record.

Let us Congress.

are there odds on mike johnson getting the gavel on the first ballot?

Polymarket has it roughly even money:

They also have Johnson at 90% as of now, was under 70% in December before Trump endorsed him.

It might be my imagination but Mike’s smug smile seems to have faded a bit.

This nominating speech is kinda weak. Faint praise. Rings fake.

Biggs didn’t register his vote? Lol never change, Andy.

The roll call vote is into the "T"s and Johnson has 3 votes against and 3 non-voting members, by my count.

Doesn’t look like there will be a speaker on the first vote

Now Biggs and Gosar cave. Arizona proud.

Looks like they had to lean on the people abstaining to make sure Jeffries didn’t win a majority. Remember, the speaker needs a majority of votes cast, not a plurality.

Johnson 216
Jeffries 215
Others 3

Johnson doesn’t seem all that happy about winning.

hahah it has to be an absolutely miserable job even in the best circumstances, much less when you’re trying to ride herd over this fucking bag of shitheads

Miserable about being third in command of the us and hugely powerful with an enormous platform to talk about the jerk off pact he has with his kid.

Don’t feel sorry for him he’s a soulless ghoul and a no good very bad deplorable scum sucking bigot asshole that bad things should very much happen to.

Even if they had accidentally voted for Jeffries, they do have the votes to just get rid of Jeffries and re-vote, right?

This asshole waving his cigar around while he fast-talks is distracting so it’s hard to say just how much of an idiot he is. He is right that by the Byrd Rule Social Security can’t be touched through reconciliation, which as I’m sure we all remember, is a process whereby budgets can be approved by simple majority and filibusters are not allowed. But Medicare and Medicaid are definitely on the chopping block.

Edit: This is the flyer this guy from Social Security Works is handing to Republicans. I’m sure Trump’s promises carry a lot of weight.

Excited. Looking forward to another great season.
