Working out / health and fitness

Are there no plates available anywhere? Fuck.

I have generally found that plain old barbell rows with the eccentric included are superior to Pendlay rows.

I did some reading and watched some videos to learn proper pushup form. I ended up hurting my left shoulder by “improving” my form. Fuck.

Now doing pull-ups too. I found I could do a grand total of 2 unassisted. Wow that’s disappointing. Got some resistance bands and can do 6 max now. Woo. Check out these guns, T!

Updated routine is good. But it’s absolutely trashed my elbow. Getting a tennis elbow type thing going on. Backing off a little bit to see if gets better, but I may need to take some proper rest.

Haven’t been reading this thread. Was doing 4-6 days/wk of CrossFit classes (orange theory) in the 5 months before March and had solid progress, especially in all around fitness.

Tried half assed to get some weights for home use (don’t like running) in the first eight weeks without success and fitness level was declining. Got word of a shipment of barbells about 4 weeks ago and bought 20 and 30 lb set and a flat bench and puzzle mats, which I set up in the living room.

Have been doing 3-4 days of 40-60 mins workouts and am finally feeling decently fit again.

Routine is 12 bench, 12 deadlift, 9 curl, 12 squat, 9 tricep extension, 12 leg lift on bench, 12 shoulder shrug, 9 arm raises for deltoids, 12 rows/pulls with one knee on bench. Repeat x 3.

This is enough to get my heart rate up and sweat some, which I see as key.

I feel like I’m finally back to baseline and am hoping to expand my workout some, ideally to like 1.5 hrs 5 days per week. In March I had hoped to drop another 10 lbs by June but have probably gained 10 lbs.

I live at the beach and really need to start swimming now. Water in so cal still cold, but want to get in that habit and get outside more in general. I’d really like to get back to classes for some legit cardio as well, but that will have to wait.

Seriously, this is crazy shit. I’ve been buying modular synth stuff all spring with no issues and everything shipped right away. Apparently I need to F5 a reddit thread and seller pages with plates to get them in the couple minutes they are available. I have kettlebells and dumbbells but squats/deadlifts etc. take forever because I need to do so many damn reps. I should do the smart thing and wait until everyone starts selling on Craigslist but once I get an idea in my head it’s tough to be patient.

I generally get better results splitting upper/lower days. Am I right that you are thinking of using that full body workout program 5 days per week? Tough to recover that way.

Right now I’m mostly 3 days a week and going for heart rate as much as muscle, using fairly lgiht weights. When I used to work out heavy I would split, and I might do that if I go 5 days (though realistically I could maybe get to 4 weight days with 2 on, 1 off, 2 on, 2 off). Right now I feel like a strict every other day or upper/lower would be an excuse to not work out as much when I’m using fairly light weights (e.g., “dead lifts” with 2 30 lb barbells).

I’ve been having elbow tendonosis for a year and a half–for me it was “golfer’s elbow” because it was on the inside tendon, not the outside “tennis elbow” one. I had assumed that my bad pullup form had been responsible for it, but a couple months of no barbell have convinced me that low-bar back squats were to blame. I keep my thumb behind the bar and use my palms to drive it into my back, which was putting a lot of strain on that tendon.

I also tried a Theraband flex bar at the recommendation of the internet. I obviously have no control group to compare results to, so maybe it helped, but I didn’t get much out of it. Still, it’s cheap and could help you strengthen the relevant muscles, so check it out.

My barbell, Rogue Fleck plates and another set of some brand of rubber coated plates all arrived this week. If you can get them ordered they are shipping out quick it looks like at least. I have to clean my garage now and set up my shit. I will need to come up with some sort of insulation and heat plan for my garage once winter hits. I rent right now so not excited about dropping a ton of money into a rental garage.

I’m pretty excited to do barbell stuff. I’ve only been doing dumbbell and kettle bell stuff for the last several years.

Fantastic. What’s your plan?

SS (CWIDT)

Before starting this and when I was maxed out on my available weights here I was doing a modified version of the Body for Life workout I did years ago that I just kept going back to. I grew out of it with the weights I have available so just ended up with my own workout. I was doing 6 sets of 20 reps for front and back lunges, deadlifts, squats and then calf raises with more reps. I used the 62 lb Onnit Werewolf bells for all that. I’m almost back to that after a winter of video games. 120 reps total takes forever so I’m really looking forward to shorter workouts and variety. I didn’t set up my weight bench when I moved a few years ago so was doing kettlebell stuff for upper body.

Cool. Sounds good. Good luck

I am still doing my modified version of Starting Strenth (reached 100kg for squat & 60kg for bench this week).
I have also started a couch to 10k program: Couch Potato to 10k – Hanson's Running Shop

It progresses a little quicker than a classic couch25k, but as I have running experience, I think it is still fine for my joints, even though I am still massively overweight. I can always slow down, if I feel it is too much.

Did the Saturday run for week 2 three times this week and will only run three times a week, as I want to stick to weightlifting three times a week too, for a few more weeks.

Welcome back to the gym

When you can’t do one pullup, but can do 30 “pullups”.

Real pullups are hard, btw. To do them right usually requires some work. I suck at pullups.

Back in the 170s for the first time in years :eyes:

Still doing push up, squat, and pull up variations. Shoulder width push ups, diamond grip push ups, clapping push ups.

Box jumps or leaping squats with a slab of wood across my back so it feels like I have a bar in place.

Pull ups usually x10-13. Doing the weird thing sometimes where I pull myself over to one side at the top for x5, then the other side the same.

Been thinking about going into the gym…mask on of course, and during the least populated time… Like 2am? Ugh. Maybe not. I want equipment for twenty minutes but feel like a moron for considering it and will feel like a moron if I then got the Rona.

3 weeks ago I went on a run at 9 am on a Saturday when it was already 25°C outside. That was no fun so I decided to go on a run before work. So 3 times a week I get up 0530 and run 5-6km and I have to say it really helps to get me going. I dont feel tired at work even if work is boring. And since Arnie said “Sleep faster” I dont feel tired after getting up after just 6hrs of sleep.
Now I only need focus to use that time more effective.
