That’s a good idea to store extra weights on the barbell when you’re not using it.
The weights get stored on the rack - it has dedicated pegs (see pic where it’s under the table). The barbell sits in the corner.
That was a joke. :)
I’ve gone pretty far down the dumbell path and don’t really have the room (spare bed, lol) to start with a real squat/bench setup. My challenge now is moving up from 60lb dumbells (after moving up from 40 and 50). IF I can find a pair of 75lb it will set me back $300. But is that really the best use of $300? (Kinda wanted to try a VR headset.) At this point it probably is. Anyone know a guy selling 75 lb rubber hex dumbells?
Obviously it’s nice to have but what do you need 75+ dumbbells for? You have a rack/bench right?
In other words, I wouldn’t spend 200 300 dollars on heavy dumbbells, anything chest shoulders back you can do well enough with a bar.
Nope, don’t have a barbell.
3x per week I do dumbell bench 3x12; squat 3x12, deadlift 3x 12; press 3x8, curl 3x8, tricep extension 3x10, 1 sided row with knee on bench 3x10.
Currently using 60 lbs for bench, squat, deadlift, want to move to 75 (where I’d probably start at 3x8).
Oh ok sorry my mistake I thought you did. Rack/cage/bench not an option?
Not really, bench and dumbells rack is in front room. Not really space for a real bench, much less a squat cage, unless I got a lil funky (which is maybe an option for barbell bench). But I don’t trust the flooring in this place for a real squat/deadlift setup.
It’s just going to get pretty expensive, you’ll need 85s or 90s then 100s for chest if you keep with it.
Yeah, telling myself that 75 would get me through Jan. Can then join a proper gym, hopefullly.
Current setup. The left side of the bench leads into the kitchen.
I basically started with dumbbells because I was doing HIIT classes pre covid. However, now I’ve read a bunch of more strength focused stuff and am taking a more strength approach, but with dumbbells (instead of progressive loading of barbells, which would be preferable). I’d like to join a barbell gym when lockdown is done.
Yeah, in that case 75s make sense but jfc I can’t get over the price tag. It used to be a dollar a pound in the olden pre virus times.
Planet Fitness sent me a 0 dollar no annual fee 10 dollars a month offer and it’s just like lol, I could probably spend more money at a library than working out there 6 times a week. But Jan is a little optimistic for going back to a gym full time no?
Optimism may be my best option atm. Worse case I just do more reps or buy some 90 lb dumbbells in Jan, but they are pretty unwieldy.
I don’t know what’s out there these days but what about something like a bowflex? If a pair of 75s is 300ish and 90s are 400ish that’d be almost half the price. I used to have one with extra rods on it. It was alright, for a flat bench movement you definitely get 250+ lbs of resistance. Their squatting attachment was aids but this was also 20 years ago.
Don’t get wrong tho, if we can some of that sweet vaccine relatively soon then a machine like that is a pretty poor investment, especially since you’re ultimately interested in barbells. I’m just personally offended by the price of the weight these days. When I got rid of all my home shit 3-4 years ago I think I sold my olympic set for 25 cents a pound and my standard weights for 15-20 cents.
Yeah, the cost is pretty absurd, but this covid shit is going to end some day. Hell, I could make do with 60 lbs for another 6 months if necessary (maintaining decent fitness while eating less to reduce weight). I’d like to gain more strength, but the difference between not working out compared with 60 vs 75 lbs dumbbells is not a big deal. I definitely don’t want to get a machine as I’ve pretty much got the “lift weights” mindset. Speaking of which, it’s liftin time.
You can get the Bowflex dumbells that go up to 105 lbs for $1100 or something.
I love mine but they only go up to 52.5 - which is ok for me for everything except shrugs - so I do barbell shrugs.
I am starting to max out though - I figure I’ll go up to 30 reps before I have to get something heavier.
Haven’t seen the 105 ones. Wish i knew about them in march, lol. That said, could get 75 and 90lb dumbells for under $700 (if i could find them) and 75 may be the most I’m comfortable with (eg, putting on thighs after doing a 12 rep bench set or holding on chest for goblet squats).
$300 is pricy, but I was paying $169/mo for classes (and trainers are more), and pay $550/mo for health insurance (mostly unused) and have dropped 2 medications since i started working out 9.5 months ago (well, 11.5 with 2 months off).

Ok these are 10 to 90. Not cheap for 2. But if you can find any on craigslist you can skip the tax and shipping.
Actually, why not just get standard dumbbells with 4 25 lb. plates (2 plates per dumbbell) and then 8 10 lb. plates? That’s what I used to have and it was fine. It could be less expensive than a pair of hex 75s… Or forgo the 25 plates and just get a bunch of 10 plates, something like this:
