Does that help long term? Or just short term pain management?

It reduces inflammation. So it’s part pain management and part preventative of stuff flaring up.

For me I think the biggest thing that helped was working out 3-4 days a week for 5 years and building up all the connective tissue, stabilizer muscles, etc. My elbows look a lot sturdier now than they did 5 years ago. It takes time to build all that stuff up to where it catches up with the muscles.

Quoting my own post for a followup and question for folks here.

I did indeed have a huge Baker’s cyst in my left knee, which after having drained, am able to fully flex that knee and relieved a decent amount of the pain. Also scans revealed no structural issues other than mild arthritis, which is good.

So the last big issue is what appears to be some (hopefully mild) patellar tendonitis. Any single-leg stuff causes some fairly obvious pain right below the kneecap when my leg is in maybe a 20-30ish degree range of flexion. The pain is only about a 3 but I’d like it to hit 0-1 before I start squatting again.

Anybody here dealt with patellar tendonitis and have experience with resolving it? I know it’s not a quick process, and rest alone is supposed to be bad. Isometric quad exercises before a workout definitely help temporarily relieve the pain, which is a start. I’ve heard good things about heavy slow resistance exercise (specifically quad stuff like leg press or extension with a 3 seconds up/down cadence, doing anything between a 15RM and 6RM), but I’m slightly worried because the arthritis issue makes my knees pretty sensitive to a lot of volume.

The nautilus squat option might be less painful

alternated between nautilus squats and medium weight bench for about 6 reps, diminishing to 4, then to throwing the bar off you with no spotter lol

hope to feel it. got a good sweat going anyway

I think your original post was a reply to mine. My knee pain continues (although it is improving) and remains undiagnosed. We took an x-ray which showed no issues. I went to PT and they ran a bunch of motion tests, and they said it was probably not a meniscus tear, and if it was, it was a minor one and would heal on its own. My doctor sems reluctant to order an MRI, because I am improving. For example I recently went to Ireland and was able to walk 5-10 miles per day with only minor pain. I’m still afraid to do any more squats though, since we don’t know what the original injury is. PT person said “maybe just tweaked something on a squat.” Gee thanks

Re: patellar tendonitis: I had it when I hiked the Appalachian Trail, but that was many years ago when I was fairly young. I kept hiking, and pounded it with Advil, and that sort of kept it at bay, but my knee hurt off and on for 2,000 miles. Continuing to hike may have been a bad idea, but in the end I don’t think I did any permanent damage. However now that I am older, if I got it again, I would definitely limit strenuous exercise, and do some icing, bracing, and quad strengthening.
