Winter cricket and bridge thread - Held over by popular demand

Oh man, very sad to hear this. Fans have probably already read this, but his 2002 memoir was well written and incredibly moving.

peart

Was never a big Rush fan but I always respected Peart’s talent. Mad technician and very interesting and unique at the same time.

Did Peart ever renounce all his Ayn Rand-worshipping objectivist horseshit lyrics?

IIRC Rush backed away from their Randian fanboy stance enough for me to stop getting annoyed with them.

You guys have any particularly egregious example songs that I can check out the lyrics on? I never noticed, but as I mentioned I wasn’t a big fan. Now you guys have me curious.

Shocked that anyone would listen to Rush and pay attention to the lyrics, it’s all about the instruments with them

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
And they’re quite convinced they’re right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream ‘oppression!’
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
‘The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light’
Now there’s no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw

Lol I remember hearing that song as a kid and thinking it was just silly. Great example of why I almost never listen to lyrics of any song. I don’t expected talented musicians to also be smart.

It’s actually better than any Ayn Rand writing that I’ve come across. And less juvenile.

And the meek shall inherit the earth…

We’ve taken care of everything
The words your read, the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eye

It’s one for all, none for one
We work together common sons
Never need to wonder how or why

We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls

Look around this world we’ve made
Equality our stock and trade
Come and join the brotherhood of man
Oh what a nice contented world
Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand

We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls

God fucking dammit. I love this song. I have it constant rotation on my iPod (along with Overture). I just thought it was aggressively stupid and silly - like their attempt at Led Zeppelin Hobbit stuff or Styx Grand Illusion - but with ancient Egypt instead.

But no. Now I have to know it’s a fucking slam of communism. Real subtle lyrics there guys. Brilliant.

Subdivisions

Rush

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In-between the bright lights
And the far, unlit unknown

Growing up, it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass-production zone

Nowhere is the dreamer
Or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths, we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights

Subdivisions
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
Subdivisions
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

Another song I love because the lyrics are so aggressively dumb.

I’m not going to look at the lyrics to Red Barchetta right now.

Really not seeing the problem. Sunshine and oak flooring for all!

Does Little Wayne still sell albums? It seems like he’s been famous for being famous for a long time.

Well, I get up at seven, yeah
And I go to work at nine
I got no time for livin’
Yes, I’m workin’ all the time

It seems to me
I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am
I guess that’s why they call me
They call me the workin’ man

They call me the workin’ man
I guess that’s what I am

‘Cause I get home at five o’clock
And I take myself out an ice cold beer
Always seem to be wond’rin’
Why there’s nothin’ goin’ down here

See these are good lyrics. Keep it simple, poetic. Repeat. No need for political speechifying. (Peart wasn’t on this album - hmmm)

The Oaks would be first in line to bitch about the Redwoods.
