Winter cricket and bridge thread - Held over by popular demand

Or, perhaps you should do a little research before you jump to the conclusion that the tweet from a person you know nothing about I has bad intent behind it?

Agree.

What counts as fast food these days?

If we’re saying “over-processed with little nutritional value” AND “prepared and delivered at lightning speed,” then the speed at which it’s delivered doesn’t matter. I can take people out for gourmet meals that take intense preparation by expert chefs and you will be in far worse health than if you let me pick from a McDonald’s menu for you.

But if we’re just saying food prepared and delivered lightning fast–well there are now all sorts of fast food options that offer an elite nutritional profile for very little money.

Wouldn’t the internet be so much better if people did this! One can dream.

Right.

And he probably wouldn’t include Trump when his net worth is -$500M.

And he probably wouldn’t include a med-school resident who’s currently underwater.

So basically just choose-your-own-adventure and insert whichever avocado toast-eating millennial or lazy minority splurging at Red Lobster for Mother’s Day really grinds your gears.

The main point is the poor should be only seen working in service capacities until they’ve sacrificed a huge chunk of their life in order to dine with the people of quality. Even for one night, to live anything remotely resembling the American lifestyle that they’re bombarded with from cradle to grave is foolish and a sign of poor character.

Forget about vacations. You need to destress, unwind or “recharge your batteries”? Sorry that’s only for the debt-free.

He certainly would include a med school resident who’s under water. Here’s a dentist with a quarter million in debt being restricted by Ramsey to rice and beans. Say what you will about Ramsey but he’s not known for telling rich idiots that their credit card or student loan debt is OK just because they have high income. He prescribes the same overly simplistic advice for everyone.

Fuck Dave Ramsey. There’s more than one way to live your life.

Of course? Did someone force you to follow Ramsey on Twitter? Like who gives a shit what this guy thinks. But his simplistic advice is dumb enough without you misrepresenting what he actually says. And of course it works for some people and improves their lives because they take control of their finances.

It’s the combo of a) the obvious subtext that the poor are poor because of a character defect, combined with b) the cult-like way his (and his clones’) devotees can’t see any other way to live your life, combined with c) a hyper-capitalist consumer-based economy that does nothing but pitch to us to blow our money on things (companies which DR happily invests in).

Something really doesn’t sit right with me about that whole machine.

Was that tweet about never going out to eat if you’re trying to pay off debt out of character?

Ramsey is more of a symptom of hypercapitalism than the underlying disease.

did the forum color schemes go away? I can’t find them anymore and mine seem to have reset

Only really take issue with a), but that kind of crumbles your whole case. Ramsey’s whole thing is that some rich people are totally out of control of their finances and some poor people are in control of their finances and live within their means. It’s the only thing he’s totally right about in my view. So having a low income isn’t a character flaw, and having a high income isn’t a virtue. According to Ramsey, living within your means is a virtue and habitually living beyond your means is a problem. And he’s right about that at least.

Certainly he ignores that it is easier to be virtuous in this way if you have a high income rather than a low income.

thanks

Mine came back last night then went away again today and a refresh fixed half the problem… I’ll refresh again as It will come back to normal is something I’ve been telling myself for over 3 years now. :joy:

Our latest Medal of Freedom honoree was just sharing with his audience how The Boy Scouts of America were intentionally destroyed.

Describing them as an organization without any history of sexual abuse or lawsuit until they were pressured to be inclusive of gays.

there were two different themes called “default” when I just checked, one that was the old one, and a different one that got rid of all the color

I was in debt my whole life until about 5 years ago. I put tons of travel on credit cards and I regret none of it. Literally nothing in my stress level changed when I paid off the credit cards. I understand that I am very lucky and an outlier as a single person who makes good money and have just never really had to worry about money since I was in my mid-20s.

But that’s my point about trying to talk to his followers (which you are re-enforcing). They can’t even conceive you might want to live a different way. Debt = hell. Out of debt = paradise.

I have 4 uncles - all 4 of them are basically done (or dead) by age 65. I refuse to put off 95% of my life gratification now for a very uncertain pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I want to see things while I’m young enough to enjoy them - and I don’t begrudge others for the same.

What does bug me though is this idea that poor people can’t go on vacation to recharge their batteries - or enjoy a nice meal out every now and then. Like if you are trying to pay off debt your entertainment budget should be zero. Which is literally what that tone-deaf simplistic tweet says.

Debt is stressful - but so is grinding your ass off in a society where you see everyone else enjoying themselves around you. I don’t think anything is worth rice and beans for 5 years, not if you can afford a little diversion now. Life’s too short and too uncertain imo.

There’s a whole lot of room between, “You should live within your means,” and “You should never go out to eat if you’re in debt (excluding a mortgage and reasonable car payment),” and I have no idea why anyone is defending the second one.

Edit: I mean I know why people are defending, I’m just trying to point out that its garbage.
