Winter 2021 LC Thread—I Want Sous Vide

Today’s John Oliver is some seriously must watch shit. I don’t want to spoil anything, but don’t bail early and see it through to the end.

I’d go farther and say the first part was below average. But that was pure gold at the end.

Is it enough to watch the 20minute piece on his topic of the day on youtube or do I miss out on something?

Don’t think his examples are very good. Bands I could nod along to being described as modern dad rock:

Pearl Jam
R.E.M.
Bush
Nickelback
Foo Fighters (although they might still be too popular)

Trump unlocked the cheat code. Always deny, never apologize, definitely don’t resign.

Actual granddad rock but still cool would be Hendrix, some late 60s-mid 70s Stones and Zeppelin, and…?

In retrospect the fake politeness of politics (think Obama vs. Romney) really succeeded at disguising the societal rot whereby at least 50% of people want a society where unredeemable assholes win because … 50%+ of people are unredeemable assholes!

The show isn’t funny without an audience. I hope they get back to it soon.

It seemed like after they were taken over by AT&T, their budget was cut because their crazy antics were way less common and the payoff was lacking.

Thankfully, the payoff was excellent for this one.

Anyone here have an occulus quest 2? Thinking of getting one but can’t decide if it will just sit unused. I’m a casual gamer at most.

Also is it worth the extra cash for 256g?

Assigning Bush and Nickelback to any demographic should be a hate crime.

What, in your view, is the outlook? Crash or no?

I’ve bought and sold twice. Still don’t know anything!

Hard no for me.

To me, dad rock is rock that is representative of the time it came from. A lot of punk rock music would be considered dad music. My students wanted to do some conversation work on music and so I asked them to watch a short video about punk rock before class to have something to talk about. Nearly all of them were either indifferent or hated it. So it clearly doesn’t connect with the current generation.

Yeah I don’t like the term or intergenerational strife in general. Besides, I’m even too old for dad rock.

I don’t know what it is that makes some music seem just as cool today as 50 years ago while most of it is obviously dated. I just know when I hear it. Like a lot of Beatles stuff. Ofc they were talented, but some things, like the psychedelic stuff, is tied to that era and doesn’t work in others. Otoh a Hendrix song like Are You Experienced? that could be described as psychedelic, has a quality that can still make me pay attention even if I can’t name it.

Dave Matthews is the dad rock for my generation.

I think youre right, Dad Rock means music that a dad thinks is cool but that his kids think is lame. Cross generation all time greats like LZ or the Beatles don’t count. It’s more aged stuff like this:
