That’s my point exactly. The first map shows warmer water off the coast of AK than CA. How is that possible? Second map contradicts this, so maybe it’s just a mistake.
The water coming from Oregon will seem cool near LA and seem warm near AK, even though it’s the same water. Cool and warm currents are always relative to the surrounding water.
LA’s water also comes in about a 4-6 month delay. So we get cold water in the summer and warmer water in the winter.
The cold water causes the marine layer in May and June and is like natural air-conditioning. It doesn’t start to get hot here usually until August when we start getting warmer water, then it stays hot until mid-Nov some years.
But all bets are off with El Niño and La Niña.
If that is what map #1 is trying to convey, it’s not doing a great job of getting the message across. Also, map #2 has cold currents for both, so it would seem that someone has to be wrong here.
“Esoteric time worship” - an activity I partook in once on eight ounces of Robitussin.
Is the above sentence grammatically correct?
Why the quotation marks?
Because it’s part of a larger sentence. For 50 years, Maya scholar Eric Thompson convinced everyone that that 50% or so of untranslated Maya glyphs were probably just “esoteric time worship”.
Not sure if it’s deserving of its own thread, but this is one hell of an article by George Packer in The Atlantic. It’s basically a novel on a web page but it’s incredibly well done.
I feel like a lot of people on this board are trapped exactly where I am, understanding where “Just America” is coming from but not wanting to give up the trappings that being one of the winners of “Smart America” has gotten me.

The above is the CA regulation. There is no federal requirement for a fork lift license.
It’s pretty common for the employer, or a vendor, to play the part of the DMV in these cases. You need a railroad engineer license to do that job, and the railroads play the part of the DMV there too.
There is also a general exclusion for the owners. You could buy your own forklift and use it to stack palettes in your own garage, and not need a forklift license.
There were a couple mom & pop job shops (small factories) that I’d go to that had some ancient factory machine that only pop could legally do production on. I could operate it. Everyone else was locked out.
Lol you have no idea how perfect this is.
I wouldn’t dismiss this idea so quickly, It worked on Futurama.
Problem solved. Forever.
Bbbut—
FOREVER!
I literally say this to myself every time I put something I don’t know what to do with in the pile of other crap I don’t know what to do with. Problem solved FOREVER!
So at the building I work at one of the tenants passed away a few weeks ago, he didn’t have anyone listed as an emergency contact but the housing org he was under told us he has a father. We call him and talk to him and tell him the stuff in the apartment if he wants anything, he says just the laptop and pics of him. Now this guy had a shitload stuff in the apartment like old magazines and maybe 500+ books. So we took the books outside and put them on the sidewalk and probably had a good 50 people grab some throughout the day. He also had a lot of crappy baseball, basketball, and nascar cards that we looked thru and then put out.
We didn’t think we would see anything valuable until we landed our eyes on these two cards, they have to be worth a ton
People in some parts of China were actually impressed with places that had four seasons.
Wuhan basically has two: hot and (relatively) cold with high humidity all year round.
gohmert is just mad that Mo Brooks passed him on the “dumbest piece of shit in congress” leaderboard after posting his email password to twitter yesterday so he came up with this dinger to recapture the lead.
He’s probably busy baking.
I read through the article and at the end of it, just devolved into both sides are bad in different ways bullshit IMO. Just fancier words.
Yeah, that’s the most important criticism of the article, I think. As much as he wants to say that conquest is not a tenable solution, Real America sure as fuck thinks it is and will happily give it a shot. It also understates the racism of Free America even while giving it some lip service, and it doesn’t really find a story for Black, Latino, and other minority Americans who are older and less educated and thus not really included in his Just America story.
