Who will run in 2020?

Obviously should have asked about this instead of that WTF nuclear power question.

He and Castro had been 2a and 2b for me, in whatever order. Now I guess Iā€™m on the fence between Warren and Bernie. Iā€™m not sure I agree with Riverman that sheā€™s inauthentic, but sheā€™s gone from leading, with, like, plans and shit, to slanking, just going through the motions of running a campaign.

Iā€™m still on-board, though my wagon was always the ā€œWarren / Bernie are 1a and 1b >>>> everyone elseā€ wagon

Warning: Bad poker analogy incoming

Liz kind of reminds me of a donk who has run well and finds themselves at the FT of the main event. Theyā€™ve never experienced anything like it, so their main focus is just trying not to mess it up, which burns up what little chance they had to ship it.

Iā€™m not going to extend the poker analogy but Pete doing better in the early states has basically sealed Warrenā€™s fate, and this dynamic is improving Bernieā€™s equity some. But under a month away from votes and nobody has focused on the main impediment to actually winning anything, which is Bidenā€™s strength in the south/strength with the olds.

Iā€™m frustrated with a lot of the shit WaPo puts out there, especially that fact-checky doofus, but at the same time they are maybe the last remaining legacy media outlet that does outstanding investigative journalism and I think they deserve support. This kind of got lost in the shuffle, but 2-3 weeks ago they published the Afghanistan Papers expose that revealed the entire military was bullshitting us about the status of the foreverwar. We wouldnā€™t know about the CIAā€™s blacksite torture centers if not for WaPo. Thereā€™s a bunch of other key stories Iā€™m forgetting about. Also, they keep Dave Weigel employed, and that man is a national treasure. Like, no one else is doing this kind of reporting in 2020 and I worry what happens when WaPo goes belly-up.

They fuck up a lot but at least they arenā€™tā€™ the NYT, consider buying a subscription.

Hot take: if we could just nuke the editorial page bullshit from WaPo, NYT, and the WSJ, and combined all their actual news coverage, weā€™d have an absolutely solid newspaper.

Is it Warrenā€™s authenticity or clarity that have her ranked over Bernie for you?

Neither really. I think Bernie is as authentic and clear as Warren. Honestly, Bernieā€™s age and health scare me. And on an even more superficial level, Iā€™d like to see a female president before the Ivanka/Haley ticket.

I was being glib.

Bernie just got a clean bill of health. Heā€™d probably be better for women than Liz. I donā€™t think the GOP
will nominate a woman in the next few cycles.

I know; youā€™ve been out-glibbed.

Ok. Vote Bernie or WAAF.

You donā€™t need a campaign staff on the BATTLEFIELD OF LOVE

Book tours have end dates. Iā€™m sure sheā€™s a little sad she has to put her personal staff back on her own payroll.

Unfortunately I agree with your read. I think she makes bad risk:reward calculationsā€¦ which is to say sheā€™s capable of doing things that have very small rewards (who ever cared about her being Native American? Obviously when people thought taxes WOULD go up on the middle class they were for her ā€˜Iā€™m with Bernieā€™ stance on healthcare would a couple of attack ads really been that bad? Why did she buckle on healthcare as soon as Pete started to gain instead of going on the offensive against Pete as a person?) that have huge back end risks attached to them.

Maybe she comes back from this, but probably she doesnā€™t. It sucks because sheā€™s the candidate with the best track record of actually getting stuff done in Washington, and I think her stump speech and story are quite strong. Sheā€™s like a superhero whose origin story is being a public school teacher. I just wish she was a better campaign strategy person I guess.
